Michael Jordan finally won the first NBA Championship of his career after defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1991 NBA Finals. But ‘His Airness’ wasn’t satisfied with just winning one title, as he aimed to clinch back-to-back championships.
At the time, only three teams had ever pulled off that feat (Minneapolis Lakers, Boston Celtics, and Detroit Pistons). MJ wanted the Chicago Bulls to become only the fourth team in NBA history to win two consecutive titles. In an interview with Bob Greene of the Chicago Tribune, Jordan revealed why he badly wanted to win back-to-back rings in 1992.
“I want to just play the games and get it done and forget about it,” Jordan said before the 1992 playoffs. “The funny thing is, after all that’s happened this year, I want it bad — I want it worse than I did last year. I didn’t think I was going to. But I do.”
But what was the true driving force behind MJ’s willingness to become a back-to-back champion? Well, he had an NSFW answer to it.
“To prove to people that the a**h***s can’t hold me down,” Mike said.
Jordan carried the Chicago Bulls to the 1992 NBA Finals after flaunting an 11-5 record in the previous rounds. In the NBA Finals, Jordan and the Bulls faced Clyde Drexler’s Portland Trail Blazers.
The first four games of the NBA Finals were back-and-forth as the series was tied at 2-2. However, the Bulls won their last two games and became only the fourth franchise in NBA history to win back-to-back championships.
Jordan averaged 35.8 PPG, 4.8 RPG, and 6.5 APG while shooting 52.6% from the field and 42.9% from downtown. Mike was undisputedly named the 1992 NBA Finals MVP for his elite performances in the series.
Michael Jordan Had The Famous ‘Shrug’ Game 1 vs. The Portland Trail Blazers
NBA fans witnessed an unseen side of Michael Jordan in Game 1 of the 1992 NBA Finals. Jordan caught fire from beyond the three-point line as he drained six three-pointers in the first half.
Jordan finished the game with 39 points, 3 rebounds, and 11 assists while shooting a ridiculous 60% from the field in the 122-89 victory. Mike did the famous ‘shrug’ celebration after dominating the game from downtown.
Magic Johnson recently revealed that he caused the celebration. Why? Johnson apparently beat MJ in a game of cards the previous night.
