It would have been a dream for Darvin Ham to be a head coach in the NBA someday when he joined the Los Angeles Lakers as a player development coach in 2011. That dream ended up becoming a reality when the Lakers, who had given him his first chance in the league, also hired him as their new head coach in the offseason.

Despite having superstars like LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook on the team, this was going to be a difficult job, but the early indications were very positive. Ham impressed the players, the media, and the fans with the way he presented himself and also the approach he was taking to coach this team, which led to growing optimism. It took just one game, unfortunately, to show just how big the size is of the task that Ham has on his hands.

Their opening game of the preseason against the Sacramento Kings saw them lead 46-41 at halftime, but with LeBron, Davis, and Westbrook not playing in the second half, the team completely collapsed. The backups were crushed 64-29 in the second half as the Lakers lost 105-75 and their fans booed the team off the court. It was an embarrassment and one remark by Ham after the game just made things even worse.

Unsurprisingly, NBA fans blasted him for making a statement like that.

“With a young team, maybe. Not the lakers. You’re using preseason to see how these guys play together and if you can tweak it but you’re not teaching half this roster anything. This guy sounds like a college or high school coach despite having a team built on vets”

“Lakers gonna have 50 lessons this year”

“Gonna be a lot of wisdom and lesson learned throughout the 37 wins this year..that talk might work in Milwaukee but not here”

“First good quote of the season after 20-30 point loss….keep these quotes coming coach”

“I don’t think Lebron wants to hear that at this stage of his career.”

“He’s a Vogel clone lmao”

“This reminds me of “the morals victories ” quotes by vogel we’re f***ed “

“Pulling this card out pretty early in the season don’t we think”

“Someone call Phil Jackson “

“He’s not gonna make it all the way through the season before getting fired”

“Gonna be a loooooong year ‍♂️”

“Yep, here we go again”

“Lakers in mid season form already “

“Lakers gonna finish with 34 Wisdoms this season”

“Loser mentality”

“Lakers definitely having more lessons than wisdom this season”

” these types of quotes are hilarious man . They might be cooked before it even starts”

“Is it just me or does every quote that comes from the Lakers sound like their season is perpetually falling apart?”

“Cringe coaching moment of the NBA pre-season here already.”

“gonna be a lotta lessons this szn for em lmfao”

He should have known better than to say something like that. To say this is all well and fine when you’re coaching a young rebuilding team, but with the Lakers, it is all about wins and losses.

Fans are suddenly quite down on the team’s prospects for the upcoming season and Ham needs to make sure they get off to a good start, or else things might start spiraling out of control. He needs to figure things out quickly, to ensure that this dream of his doesn’t turn into a nightmare.
