At this point last season, the Chicago Bulls were one of the top seeds in the East. With Zach LaVine, Demar DeRozan, and Lonzo Ball, the team made a lot of noise in the first half of the season before falling off a cliff.

The difference for the Bulls was Lonzo Ball, who went down with a meniscus tear in January. The original 8-week timetable has long since passed by now and many fans are wondering when Lonzo will make his return.

Sadly, it doesn’t appear to be any time soon. As ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on ‘NBA Countdown,’ the Bulls guard may not return at all this season.

“Lonzo Ball hasn’t played point guard for the Bulls since January of last season. It’s been almost 11 months and there are no guarantees that he plays at all this season. He’s rehabbing that knee now, he’s still feeling some pain it. The hope is that, perhaps by the All-Star break in mid-February, they have a sense of whether Lonzo Ball is ready to come back and play for Chicago. A lot of that may depend on where are the Bulls in the standings. Right now, they’re 11th, they’re out of the playoff picture, and if they’re lingering around that area, a lot of decisions will be made about whether he plays at all. But really, you can mark the downward spiral of this team at the beginning of that injury last January.”

The Bulls were fighting for home-court advantage in the playoffs not too long ago, but the injury to Ball has really set the franchise back.

Now, there are calls for the Bulls to start over and wipe the slate clean.

Chicago Bulls Could Start Total Rebuild Amid Rough Season

The Bulls aren’t even in playoff contention right now, which is pretty disappointing considering they still have DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Nikola Vucevic on the roster.

That core isn’t bad by any stretch, but there are doubts it’s good enough to win a title and the Bulls are feeling more pressure than ever to start making trades.

“Everyone is watching Chicago very closely,” one NBA source said. “They’re so poorly constructed, they need to blow it up.”

If Lonzo doesn’t play at all this season, what hope do the Bulls have of making a run in the East? As their starting point guard, and the glue that makes everything work, this team isn’t going to get far if they are not complete.

Hopefully, Ball finally gets a break in his injury luck and he’s able to return to the court before it’s too late.
