NBA legend Allen Iverson was one of the most influential players in the league during his playing days. He may have never won an NBA Championship, but the impact that he had on the NBA can never be understated.
Iverson was a joy to watch during his prime as he destroyed opponents with his amazing ball-handling skills. Since AI was a top player in the league, he was also getting paid a lot of money to play basketball in the NBA.
But unlike many other highly paid players, being financially responsible was never Iverson’s strong suit. So much so that Iverson’s former teammate Matt Barnes once claimed that the 76ers superstar used to spend $30,000-$40,000 in strip clubs.
Via Sports Illustrated:
“Allen was the first guy that showed me how NBA players spend money in strip clubs,” Barnes says. “That guy went. HARD. He’d throw so much money, and this was when I was first in the league, that I used to take my foot and scoop the s— under my chair and either re-throw it or put some in my pocket. He’d throw $30,000, $40,000 every time we went. I’m like, ‘You realize what I can do with this money?’”
Now, that’s a huge number, even for an NBA player who is earning millions of dollars each year. However, considering the image that was created of Iverson, no one doubted that this story could be fake at the time.
Allen Iverson Denied Matt Barnes’ Claims
Iverson might have been a big spender, but even for him spending so much money in strip clubs nonetheless sounds a tad bit too much. As it turns out, AI blatantly denied Barnes’ claims about his huge spending habits in strip clubs.
Via CBS News:
“I don’t know what Matt is talking about,” he said earlier this month. “I was rich at 21, so ain’t no telling what I may have done, but I know I ain’t do that.”
As Iverson mentioned, he was pretty rich even at the age of 21. Of course, he had a lavish lifestyle, but AI denied all of Barnes’ claims.
Iverson still mentioned in the interview that he doesn’t remember what he may have done during that time. Well, we are sure whatever he had done, it wasn’t normal and involved a lot of money regardless.
