The Lakers are in a surprisingly open Western Conference, but there is a very good chance that they won’t even make it to the play-in tournament.
For LeBron James, who’s still playing at an elite level, this is simply not acceptable. The King has spoken about how frustrated he is with losing, noting that he is all about winning. The Lakers don’t seem like they’re going to make a move either, if reports are to be believed, so there might not even be light at the end of the tunnel.
Bill Simmons Laid Out LeBron James’ Situation With The Lakers
LeBron signed an extension ahead of this season that will see him remain under contract till 2025. He has a player option in 2024, but he is tied to the Lakers for at least another season after this one ends. And with the way things have been going for the franchise, Bill Simmons questioned that decision on his podcast.
“Here’s the part I don’t understand, nobody has been able to explain this to me – why did LeBron sign the extension? Why? What was he thinking? What was the point in that? Why not keep your options open? We already know LeBron is, like, a billionaire, we already know he loves to bet on himself and take things year to year… why sign an extension and make it impossible for the team to trade you if something goes wrong?
“Do you realize how much more fun this season would be if LeBron was tradeable right now? How many teams would we be sending him to? How many times we’d be on the trade machine trying to make trades for him. It’s such a bummer, and I don’t understand why he, a genius and one of the smartest NBA players we have, didn’t look at this from a big picture standpoint and say “wow, Davis gets hurt a lot, if Davis gets hurt this year I’m f*****.” But nope, he signs it.”
There are some great points in this rant from Bill Simmons, James’ desire to play with his son Bronny also makes his decision to commit here a bit baffling. If the Los Angeles Lakers do not improve this season or in the summer, though, LeBron James could push to be traded.
