Kevin Garnett was a crucial part of the Boston Celtics 2008 championship run with their “Big 3” next to Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. His all-around offensive game and defensive acumen were key to the Boston Celtics being able to get to the NBA Finals, and eventually defeating Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. He was also an MVP during his time in Minnesota, and he was deservedly part of the 2021 Hall of Fame class.

It looks as though Kevin Garnett will be receiving another honor during the next NBA season. The Boston Celtics have announced that they will retire Kevin Garnett’s No. 5 jerseys during a regular-season matchup against the Dallas Mavericks on March 2022. Tim Bontemps reported that there were originally plans for the Boston Celtics to do the jersey retirement last year.

There is no doubt that this jersey retirement is well-deserved, and Kevin Garnett had a great 6 seasons with the Boston Celtics. While he wasn’t necessarily as good in Boston as he was during his peak with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Kevin Garnett was still an elite player and made multiple All-Stars during his time there.

Kevin Garnett’s jersey still isn’t in the rafters for the Minnesota Timberwolves, the team where he spent the majority of his career and his prime. While Kevin Garnett is going to get recognition for his time in Boston, it seems as though he deserves a jersey retirement in Minnesota as well, simply due to his history with the franchise and status as a legend among fans. Hopefully, Kevin Garnett will have that opportunity with the Timberwolves in the future.

Celtics fans will certainly be excited about this announcement, and there is always love from fans of any team to players who were part of bringing them a championship. We can expect a loud ovation from Boston Celtics fans and the ceremony itself will be a great celebration of Kevin Garnett’s impact on the franchise.
