Charles Oakley Explains How He Became Friends With Michael Jordan: "Sometimes During Training Camp, We Just Seemed To Get Closer And Closer. Next Thing You Know We Just Started Hanging."

Michael Jordan was not the most open person to play with. Given Jordan's incredible mentality, and his insatiable desire to win all the time, Jordan can be harsh on his teammates. Jordan demands the best of his teammates, as that is exactly what he gave to them and his team. But MJ did manage to befriend a few teammates.

One of Michael Jordan's closest teammates is Charles Oakley. Oakley was a big man and an enforcer for the Chicago Bulls during his stint there. Oakley looked out for Jordan, and fans could tell by watching them that Oakley was very protective of Jordan and took care of him during his younger years.

Charles Oakley recently spoke to Draymond Green for his podcast. On the podcast, Oakley explained how he befriended Michael Jordan. According to Oakley, Jordan was very much focused on basketball. And their time shared together during practice sessions and preseason training brought them closer together. The two forged a bond during the All-Star game when they went to Dallas together (0:48 mark).

“He was always about business and I was there doing my craft, working on my game, and showing them I wanted to be there. Sometimes when training camp started, we just seem to get closer and closer. Next thing you know, we started just hanging. He took me to All-Star Dallas, took me on his wings and we’ve been tight ever since.”

Clearly, Oakley and Jordan were very close, and they are still close to this day. While Oakley and Jordan didn't play for long, the two had a lot of love and respect for each other. Oakley's best years came while he was playing for the New York Knicks alongside Patrick Ewing, and he helped the Knicks pose a tough challenge to the Bulls.

Recently, Oakley has also spoken about the relationship between Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Oakley noted that their relationship is over, after all the comments that Pippen made about Michael Jordan in his book. Given how well Oakley knows Jordan, he can be considered a reliable source on the matter.
