Damian Lillard is one of the most dangerous NBA players right now. The Portland Trail Blazers superstar struggled to get things going early in the season, although it's been reported that he's been dealing with an injury since the Tokyo Olympics.
Still, nobody denies that when healthy, Lillard is one of the most skilled and lethal scorers in the league. This means he's faced plenty of talented defenders over his career although not everybody has made a big impression on the All-Star point guard.
Recently, the veteran held an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit in collaboration with Gatorade. He had the chance to talk with fans, and answer whatever questions they may have, including the young player with the most similarities to him, and his childhood basketball idols.
When somebody asked about the best three perimeter defenders in the league at this moment, Lillard went with three suffocating players.
"I would say Jrue Holiday, Ben Simmons, and Lu Dort. Those would be the top three for me."
This is a solid trio that would give offensive stars a lot of trouble. Jrue Holiday was crucial for the Milwaukee Bucks last season by sharing responsibilities with PJ Tucker and guarding the best player on rival teams during the magical 2021 playoffs. He's been one of the best defenders in the league for some time now, although he doesn't get enough credit for that.
Ben Simmons is inactive right now due to mental health issues and his refusal to return to the Philadelphia 76ers. Still, he's still acknowledged as one of the best defenders in the league. Perhaps he hasn't improved offensively, but Ben gets better on defense every season. It's good to see a player like Lillard giving him flowers to that aspect of his game.
Last but not least, Luguentz Dort made the cut for Dame. The Oklahoma City Thunder standout is a very intense defender, who gives his everything in every play. He's not as gifted offensively as Holiday and Simmons, but Dort's work on defense is remarkable. The Thunder found a gem in the Canadian, who is a menace for rivals, including Lillard.
These three can excel on the defensive side and help teams shut down big players. Dame is well aware of that and picked them as the best perimeter defenders in the association right now.
