Dominique Wilkins seemed to shut down Anthony Edwards‘ comments about his generation during a recent appearance on the ‘All The Smoke’ podcast. Wilkins noted that his generation learned from their predecessors, and respected them for what they did. But he does get annoyed when younger players today slander his generation.
“We give all eras their respect because we had to learn from somebody. So we learned from the guys before us. So, we always appreciate basketball. We talk about it, but one thing we will say; it’s their time, we’ve had our time. But I hate when they try to sh*t on us to prove their point.”
“They don’t have to do that. Because great is great, I don’t care what era you’re in. Don’t use past eras to elevate yourself. Because we never did that to guys. I’m never going to say I’m better than Wilt Chamberlain or [Bill] Russell…”
“We appreciated you guys because we learned from y’all. Anytime I get the chance to talk to the guys before me, man, I’m like a kid in a candy store. It’s a pleasure for me. I never thought that I was bigger than the game.”
“Nobody’s bigger than the game because it’s always one coming behind. No one person is going to be bigger. You can be an iconic figure of the game, we have a lot of guys who fit that bill, but the game is going to keep evolving, with or without you.”
“It’s their time. We’ve had our time. But I hate when they try to sh*t on us just to prove their point.”

Dominique Wilkins does make a valid point about players of certain generations tearing down other generations. However, that point does ring hollow when we look at players from his and other generations that continuously denigrate players of the modern era.
Just recently, Rasheed Wallace took a shot at Edwards for his comments, claiming that he isn’t a superstar in the NBA, and wouldn’t be able to find success in the league if he played in Wallace’s era. So clearly, the dismissive tone towards players of different generations goes both ways.
Anthony Edwards Has Caused A Storm Of Controversy
Anthony Edwards’ comments about players from Michael Jordan’s era have caused a lot of former and current players to respond. Magic Johnson slammed Edwards, claiming that he has no room to talk considering he hasn’t won an NBA championship in his career.
Paul George also shut down Edwards’ comments, as he noted that it was disrespectful of Edwards to slander players from the past who paved the way for the modern generation of NBA stars.
Kevin Garnett went one step further and claimed that no player from the current generation would be able to find success in the NBA in the previous era. Stephen A. Smith pushed back on this and claimed that LeBron James and Stephen Curry would thrive in any and every era of the NBA.
Needless to say, Edwards will have these comments held against him for a long time, and every accomplishment or failure of his will be scrutinized based on these comments.
