Draymond Green is one of the NBA players who have found the most success in the last 20 years. Thanks to his style of play, personality, and intensity on the court, Green has become a favorite of the Golden State Warriors fanbase while also embracing his villain role against rivals.

Just like many players, Draymond didn’t have a childhood surrounded by luxury, so he learned to appreciate the little things. It wasn’t an easy journey for him, but he fought through that and became an NBA player, landing on the right team for him to develop his skills.

Right now, he’s earned a lot of money and keeps aiming to make more and expand his empire, but back in the day, Green’s mom struggled with money, although he never found out about it until he was a grown man.

Draymond Green Was Shocked After Finding Out His Mom Was Really Poor

During a recent appearance on the Checc’n In Podcast, Draymond talked about the issues his mother face while he was growing up. Green admitted that he knew he was poor, but he never felt like it, as his house had everything he could ask for, and things didn’t seem to be as bad as they were (14:33).

“And going back to my mom, I’m so appreciative of her. I know my mom used to tell us when we [were] kids… ‘We poor! Stop asking, we ain’t got it. We poor.’ But it never appeared to me that we were poor, you know what I’m saying? We had a house, we had lights, we had water. You know, there were a couple times it got cut off but she got it cut right back on… When I got to the NBA my rookie year, my accountant said ‘Hey, you should claim your mom on your taxes.’ …In order to claim her on [my] taxes, I had to find out how much money she made. My mom was making $17,000 a year. I said, ‘Wow, we really were poor.’ She never let me see that.”

That must have been a shocking discovery for Draymond, as her mom kept the secret very well for many years. It’s hard to survive with that type of money, but Mary Babers managed her finances in a great way, giving her son the idea that they were comfortable, but only she knows how hard things must have been for them.

The bright side is that Draymond became an NBA player who makes millions a year and can take care of his mother and his family. He has invested in several businesses, making more money from them, too, and that doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Life works in mysterious ways, and Draymond knows that very well.
