In what has been a rough and frustrating season for the Warriors, 4x Champion Draymond Green is doing his best to right the ship and keep the Warriors in play for the postseason this spring.
Sof ar, Dray has done little to quell his team’s struggles and the Dubs are just 22-22 through 44 games this season.
While Dray himself has not been playing the best, he continues to find motivation from the most unlikely sources. As he admitted in a chat with The Athletic this week, even his own hecklers can help him bring out his best sometimes.
“It wasn’t necessarily that it bothered me. He was talking the entire time. So it wasn’t that in particular. That was just some of the stuff he was saying. He was talking Hall of Fame, he was talking about scoring. “Draymond, you scared.” He told me I was scared. I think that set me off more than anything. When he was like, “Oh, you scared,” I was like, “Scared?” We’re out here playing the Washington Wizards, on a soft Monday, and the games I’ve played in, and I’m scared? Why would this game scare me? Three p.m. on Monday. Game 42. It’s not even a national television game, let alone a big game. So, I think that probably set me off more than anything.”
The situation Draymond was referencing here happened on Monday against the Wizards when one courtside fan found himself in trouble for trash-talking the defending champs.
“Everyone on our team heard the guy on the baseline talking – or on the sideline – and everyone, including our coaches, were like, ‘Draymond, shut him up’. It wasn’t just me that fed off that. I think everybody fed off that. Shout out to that guy. He kept saying, ‘you think you’re a Hall of Famer? I better not ever hear you say that again’. I’m like that, bro, I’ve been like that. Don’t do that. Sometimes you gotta, what they say, let a sleeping dog lie. He should’ve just let me stay where I was. It wasn’t here. It wasn’t here so I appreciate it.”
Green went off for 17 points and 10 rebounds that night to cap off a 127-118 road win for the defending champs. While it was a good sign of things potentially turning around, there are still a lot of problems the Warriors need to address.
Will The Warriors Finish Within The Top Six This Season?
Nobody on the planet is brave enough to count the Warriors out completely, but they haven’t looked good this season at all compared to what they were a year ago.
Just half a game back from the 6th seed in the West, Golden State still has plenty of time to secure a seeding and avoid the play-in tournament altogether.
Regardless, no matter what they do, they’ll need Draymond at his best if they want any hope of repeating as champions.
