Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis doesn’t have much love for his former head coach Doc Rivers. Back in 2014, Rivers infamously had Los Angeles Clippers security escort Davis back to the locker room during a game following a verbal altercation, and the big man hasn’t forgotten the incident. During an appearance on the Talk With Flee podcast, he told host Cam’Ron that he felt betrayed by Rivers and the Clippers.
“When you think about that year, yeah I’m not perfect. But Doc knows me,” Davis said. “He knows my heart. He’s seen me play trillions of times and knows that I’ll give anything to be able to play for my teammates and to be able to be on the floor. But that year, Houston, he takes me out the game and it’s heated.
“I say, ‘Doc, what you brought me here (for), man? I wanna ball. I’m trying to play.’ He looks at me and he says, ‘Go to the back. Just go to (the back).’ At first, I didn’t wanna move, I said, ‘I’m not going nowhere… You’re not about to kick me off.’ And then when he got the security to like, ‘Come on, Glen.’ In the middle of a game.”
This incident took place in the second quarter of the game between the Clippers and the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center on March 29, 2014. With Blake Griffin having suffered an injury in the first quarter, Davis wanted to play more but Rivers didn’t want him in the game. The two got into a heated exchange and the head coach had security take the big man away.
Davis says that incident made him realize that Rivers had changed. They were together on the Boston Celtics from 2007 to 2011 but this was no longer the same individual in his eyes. Davis felt Rivers was now trying to save his own backside as he was under more pressure than in the past. He also called him out for giving his son Austin Rivers a deal when he was the president of basketball operations for the Clippers.
As if all this wasn’t enough, the biggest insult was yet to come. Davis claimed that Rivers likes Black players but loves the White ones. In response, Cam’Ron asked him if he was calling his former head coach a c**n.
“Low-key, yeah,” Davis said.
Cam’Ron then asked Davis if he thought Rivers was an “Uncle Tom” and he had the same response. Talk about burning the bridge to the ground.
What’s interesting about this whole situation, is that Rivers did not feel that his sending Davis to the locker room was all that big of a deal. Here is what he said postgame.
“Nothing went on with me,” Rivers said. “I thought Baby was just too emotional, and for me, if you’re too emotional I always send you back to the locker room and keep you back there until the next game. I love Baby. I just didn’t think emotionally he was ready to play tonight, so we told him to go to the locker room.”
Rivers also stated this was just a matter of him not wanting a distraction on the bench.
“No, we’re not going to get into the whole Baby thing; this has not been building,” Rivers stated. “He was emotional tonight, and we told him to go sit down. I just thought he was a distraction, and when guys are a distraction, I don’t think they should be on the bench. If you’re a distraction for anybody on the bench that should be paying attention to the game, then go sit in the back so our guys can watch the game.”
Little did Rivers know at the time that Davis would take this so badly. Despite being quite upset over being sent to the locker room, Davis would be with Rivers and the Clippers for another season. He signed a one-year deal to stay with the team in 2014-15 and that would prove to be his last season in the NBA.
Davis currently finds himself behind bars as he is serving 40 months in prison for healthcare fraud. In case you’re wondering how he showed up on the podcast, well, this was recorded one week before he turned himself in.
