Gregory Weeks, the judge who presided over the 1996 murder trial of Michael Jordan‘s father, James Jordan, is petitioning North Carolina’s Parole Commission to release the convicted killer, Daniel Green, after sentencing him to life in prison 28 years ago.

Weeks argued to the Parole Commission that the forensic analyst in the investigation did not disclose that the blood found on the dashboard of Jordan’s car may not have been his blood at all. Weeks ruled against Green in 1996 primarily based on the testimony of Larry Demery, who was a co-defendant in the trial.

Weeks told the commission that the omission of this information greatly impacted the results of the trial, and this has haunted him for nearly 30 years. The North Carolina Parole Commission will deliberate on this decision, and reveal their decision in a month.

Daniel Green was informed about this petition by Judge Weeks, and when speaking to ABC News via a phone interview, said that the judge speaking about the results of the case is vindicating, and he hopes that the truth will prevail and he will see freedom after 28 years in prison.

“The fact that the judge who presided over my trial asked that I be paroled is significant. It speaks volumes about this case, and I’m overwhelmingly grateful.”

Green also gave his side of the story when it comes to the incident with James Jordan, noting that Larry Demery, his childhood friend, went to complete a drug deal, and then returned visibly shaken up, and asked Green to help him dispose of the body of James Jordan. While Green noted he agreed to help, he maintains he had no involvement in the murder of Jordan.

James Jordan Was Found Two Weeks Later

After Green and Demery dumped the body of James Jordan, authorities found him two weeks later 60 miles later across state borders in South Carolina, 60 miles away from where James Jordan’s Lexus was found in Robeson County, North Carolina.

In a letter to the North Carolina Parole Commission, Green expressed his regret for his actions, and how they impact the Jordan family. He also added that his decisions in his younger years haunt him, as does the trauma it caused Michael Jordan and the rest of his family.

“Every day I live with the remorse and the pain and the suffering caused by my youthful decisions. I regret the harm my actions inflicted on the Jordan family.”

Michael Jordan was heavily affected by the passing of his father in 1993, as he decided to walk away from the NBA and retire after his passing. Jordan went to pursue a career in baseball, as that was a sport he was very passionate about, and didn’t want to continue his basketball career without his father by his side.

Upon his return to the NBA in 1995, and the Bulls’ subsequent NBA championship win in 1996, Jordan was seen hysterically sobbing in the locker room, missing his father, as the Bulls sealed the title on Father’s Day. It was a tragedy that Jordan suffered, but there is no doubt that James Jordan was proud of the man he had become, and would be even more proud to see everything Jordan has achieved since then.
