Kobe Bryant Shut Down Comparisons To Michael Jordan After 81-Point Game: "I Just Wish They Would Stop You Know. There's No Comparison, He's Michael Jordan And I'm Kobe."

Kobe Bryant Shut Down Comparisons To Michael Jordan After 81-Point Game: "I Just Wish They Would Stop You Know. There's No Comparison, He's Michael Jordan And I'm Kobe."

Kobe Bryant was one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history, often in a class of his own when it came to getting the ball through the hoop. And in a game against the Toronto Raptors in 2006, Kobe managed to achieve the 2nd highest points tally in the history of the NBA, dropping 81 points in a single game.

Bryant had idolized Michael Jordan when he was coming up as a young player and while his respect and admiration for Michael would stay with him throughout his life, the Mamba was leaving his legacy in the NBA. Unsurprisingly, Kobe was asked in the press conference after his 81-point game about Michael, and he was blunt about the fact that the comparison wasn't really necessary.

Reporter: "Even Michael Jordan never had a night like this."

Kobe: "You know, throughout my career, I've been compared to him so many times and I just wish that they would just stop. You know what I mean? Just stop. He was Michael Jordan, I'm Kobe Bryant, we're two different players. It annoys me. I really wish people would stop trying to measure up what I do in comparison to what he has done. You know, just let what I do speak for itself.”

Jordan and Kobe stayed close off the court, with MJ giving a tearful goodbye speech following Bryant's tragic passing in 2020. It was a heartfelt moment and it showed how deep the bond the two had was. On the court, Kobe would go on to surpass MJ's all-time points tally but won a championship less than the Chicago Bulls legend.

Bryant's 81-point game in the modern era will likely stay unmatched as a record for a really long time, the Mamba's achievement is only behind Wilt's 100 points in a game. And while it would be nice to have Kobe's 81-point game be unmatched in the modern NBA, this story is a great example of the next generation passing the previous one to create their legacy.
