When Tyronn Lue was elevated to the head coaching role with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016, there wasn’t a whole lot of excitement surrounding his appointment. Lue had never been a head coach in the league, but he immediately silenced his doubters by winning the championship in his first season.
Having LeBron James and Kyrie Irving on his team certainly helped, but Lue has shown since then that he is one of the best coaches in the league. He has done a fine job as the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, and he recently led them to a 10th straight win over the Los Angeles Lakers under his guidance. Prior to the game, he had stated that LeBron used to think about surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the all-time leading scorer when he was coaching him, but James hilariously called him out for lying.

“Don’t let T Lue gas you up like that. T Lue is lying. I never thought that I could catch Kareem in scoring, that has never been something that has been on my mind. He’s lying there but he’s not a liar but he’s lying there for sure. I also think that he went to the roof in Oracle Arena and in that locker room and took that money too that we would try to go back and get when we went back for Game 7 too because it wasn’t there when we went back. I think he took that money and told us somebody else went up there and grabbed it.”
Lue did indeed reveal that he took that money during an appearance on The Old Man and the Three podcast. He said that the first thing LeBron asked him was where their money was, and he hilariously told him it disappeared. The two clearly had a great time together, and it is no surprise that LeBron wanted the Lakers to hire him as their head coach a few years back.
The Lakers Would Have Been In A Better Position Now If Lue Was Their Coach
Lue was in the running for the head coaching job with the Lakers before they ultimately hired Frank Vogel. He revealed last year that the contract that the Lakers offered him was far below the one he had signed with the Cavaliers, and they also wanted to dictate the rest of his staff, so he backed out.
The Lakers won a title with Vogel, but he seemed to have lost the locker room by his third season and was let go. The Lakers have also failed to even win a playoff series after winning that title, and there is no doubt that things would have gone better under Lue. His relationship with LeBron would have ensured that he wouldn’t lose the locker room, and he could have led them to more glory.
