The Los Angeles Lakers bounced back well from a 2-10 start to the season by winning 8 of their next 10 games, but they have somewhat come back down to earth by losing four out of their last five. Those defeats came at the hands of some of the top teams in the NBA, though, and the Lakers almost beat two of them.

LA took both the Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics to overtime but fell short in the extra period on both occasions. After the defeat to the Celtics, LeBron James was asked if the Lakers are moving in the right direction due to these near victories, but he squashed that talk instantly.

(starts at 1:08 mark):

“Nothing. That we lost. You’re talking to the wrong guy talking about ‘almost win.’ No. We lost.”

He kept it real right there, and as he said, he’s the wrong guy to ask about these almost wins. At the end of the day, your record is who you are, and until the Lakers start winning these kinds of games with some kind of regularity, it doesn’t really matter if they come close a few times.

Anthony Davis Took Responsibility For The Losses To The Sixers And Celtics

The Lakers were actually in a position to win both of those games, especially the one against the Celtics, but free throws proved to be their undoing. Anthony Davis had some big misses at the line late in those games, and he took responsibility for the losses because of that.

There is probably no one the Lakers would have rather had at the line, considering how amazing Davis has been over the last month or so, but it just didn’t work out. They can ill afford many more losses like these, as every game really matters now after that poor start they had. They are up against the Denver Nuggets next, who are currently the third seed in the Western Conference and they’ll be hoping that this time, they actually can finish the job against a top-tier opponent.
