NBA Assistant Coach Isn't Sold On Chet Holmgren Becoming A Star: "He's So Thin In Hips And Legs... I Don't Think He'll Ever Fill Out."

Chet Holmgren was the No. 2 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, and there's no doubt that he could end up as a potential star. He has a lot of skill and talent, most of which was on display during his Summer League debut against the Utah Jazz.

However, despite his skill, there are people who doubt Chet Holmgren's ability to become a star due to his physique. An NBA assistant coach that was sitting courtside for Holmgren's debut suggested that he is "physically weak" and added that he's "not sold on" Chet Holmgren developing into a star. Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated relayed the news.

“I’m not sold on him being a star,” said an NBA assistant sitting courtside for Holmgren’s debut. “He’s obviously an excellent shooter, skilled, but he is so physically weak. He can’t get by his defender and he realized that early and settled for threes the rest of game. He’s so thin in hips and legs that he makes [teammate] Poku [Aleksej Pokusevski] look like he has thick legs. I don’t think he’ll ever fill out. He will need to make difficult shots this season to have a good year because he settles for jumpers and can’t play inside. He was able to use his length to block shots on drivers tonight but NBA guys will just get into his body. He has a long way to go.”

It remains to be seen if Chet Holmgren will develop into the superstar that his draft position implies he will. We have already seen stars like Kevin Durant praise him after his debut, and it's clear that despite some naysayers, a lot of people are high on Chet Holmgren's ability.

Hopefully, we see Chet Holmgren lead the Oklahoma City Thunder back to contention status in the future. While it is very likely that they won't be a playoff team next season, if Chet Holmgren pans out as planned, that moment will come sooner rather than later.
