There aren’t enough superlatives to describe just how amazing what LeBron James is currently doing is. The King has been phenomenal, and since he turned 38 has been averaging nearly 34 points per game. As he approaches the all-time scoring record, it is hard to believe that LeBron James looks just as good as he did 5 years ago, if not better on an individual level.

Things aren’t looking so good for his team, though, the Los Angeles Lakers are still outside the play-in spots. They have an opportunity to climb up, being just 4 games behind the 4th seed with Anthony Davis set to return, but a lot will have to go right for them. And while some may think that LeBron James is now playing to chase records or because he can, others know the King’s real motivations.

Pat Riley Says LeBron James Just Wants To Win More Championships

Pat Riley was instrumental in bringing LeBron James to the Miami Heat in the 2010s and is a big factor in two of the King’s rings. And speaking to ESPN about what is causing LeBron James to continue playing at such a high level despite his age, Riley said there is only one goal for him.

“That’s where LeBron is,” he said. “I’m not speaking to anything that he might say in the media, but that’s his only reason to continue to play. Breaking the scoring record will be big for him if it happens, and it will happen. But he wants to win titles; that’s what drives him. And so for him to continue to play at this level, with that hope that this team is going to come together out there and Anthony Davis gets back, I think they got a shot. I really do. And I believe he believes that too.”

LeBron James already has more points than Michael Jordan and is about to have more than anyone else. He has more assists than Magic Johnson and more Finals MVPs than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The only thing he lacks is championships, and while the Lakers are a long shot at winning one this season, the King is trying to will his team to somehow make it and get another ring.
