After his 23 points against the Memphis Grizzlies, LeBron James is now only 260 points away from breaking the all-time NBA scoring record. The record has been held for over 3 decades by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and was once thought to be unbreakable. But LeBron James has almost reached it, and it looks like he’ll build it up to a much bigger number than Kareem’s already impressive tally.

LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar don’t have much of a relationship, as the King himself has said before. But the fact that he will cross the record in a Lakers jersey has some meaning, with many wondering if Kareem will be there for it. However, Robert Horry doesn’t quite see that happening, saying as much on his ‘Big Shot Bob’ podcast.

“People always say records are made to be broken. That’s bullsh*t. Everybody say that ain’t got no damn record. You don’t want your record to be broken. You wanna be No. 1 all-time in that situation, so, if someone’s about to break my record, you think Imma go sit up in the f**king stands and watch him break my record and be p**sed off? No.”

Big Shot Bob makes a good point, especially considering that Kareem tends to be scanted in modern GOAT conversations too. However, he has also always been a class act, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he was there as well. There’s no doubt that it’ll sting for Kareem though, even Magic Johnson said it would.

Magic Johnson Said Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Won’t Enjoy Having His Record Broken By LeBron James

The way things are going, LeBron James needs just 260 more points, and he’s likely to do it before the All-Star break. It will be another iconic moment in the career of a true great of the game, but as Magic Johnson suggested, it’s not something Kareem will take too well

“I don’t think well. If I gotta say, we gotta be honest and the fact is that it’s a dude playing for the Lakers too. It’s a dude playing in LA. I think it’ll be a hard pill to swallow.”

No great player ever likes to be upstaged, but the nature of sports is such that those that come after often tend to surpass the ones that came before. And while their relationship might not be the greatest, likely no one else can appreciate just what it takes to achieve what LeBron James has than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
