With a record of 14-13, the Atlanta Hawks have not met expectations so far this season. After acquiring two-way star Dejounte Murray, Atlanta was hoping to compete for the top seeds in the East. Sadly, that just hasn’t been the case in these first few months.
As a result of the team’s shaky position, the future of young power forward John Collins has fallen under major doubt and there is a sense that the Hawks could use him to help revamp their roster.
According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Atlanta has already talked to four teams about Collins.
In the meantime, two notable names surely on the market, and on the move, are Phoenix’s Jae Crowder and Atlanta’s John Collins.
Meanwhile, the Hawks have had several teams in the Collins market, such as Utah, Washington, Brooklyn and Dallas, sources said. Atlanta has not shown interest so far in a potential framework that would contain Brooklyn’s Joe Harris, those sources said. Phoenix has a desire for Collins but does not appear inclined to take on the forward, who is in the second season of a five-year, $125 million pact.
Collins, 25, has faded into obscurity in Atlanta’s offense but his particular skillset could provide a major boost for a lot of teams in the league, and the Hawks could net a substantial return for his services.
Could John Collins Join The Nets?
Among the teams interested in Collins, the nets are no doubt the most intriguing. While they may not have the assets required to pull off a deal, adding Collins to their already stacked team could be the final piece they need to begin an Eastern Conference takeover,
Following the four-year, $95 million extension with forward De’Andre Hunter, rival NBA executives believe Atlanta will likely have to part with either forward John Collins, swingman Bogdan Bogdanovic, or center Clint Capela to avoid looming luxury tax concerns next season.
“I’m told the Nets have touched base with Atlanta on John Collins… The Nets I think in search of some help along the frontline. John Collins could certainly help them, I’m not sure,” reported Ian Begley.
The Hawks still have plenty of time to salvage this season, and we can expect them to do whatever is necessary to make their squad better.
Trading Collins may be the best way to do that right now, but it remains to be seen where he will ultimately end up by the season’s end.
