NBA Rumors: Golden State Warriors Could Sign Paul Millsap

The Golden State Warriors are a team that is coming off a down season where they missed the playoffs. However, they should get Klay Thompson back next season, and they have signed veterans this offseason, suggesting that they should be back to being a playoff team, with an outside chance at the title. There could yet be another addition to the roster, as the Warriors do have a roster open and the taxpayer mid-level exception to spend ($5.9M), and it is possible they could add more players to the roster.

It looks as though one of the players they could be adding is veteran Paul Millsap, who last played for the Denver Nuggets. Per Wes Goldberg of The Mercury News, the Warriors have already spoken with Paul Millsap’s representatives, and there seems to be a possibility that he will be signed, though the luxury tax could complicate that.

According to a league source, the Warriors spoke with veteran forward Paul Millsap’s representation earlier this month. Although those talks did not advance to the point of anything material, the Warriors have not shut the door on potentially adding the 36-year-old Millsap.

At this point in his career, Millsap’s on-court production isn’t worth the full $5.9 million exception and ensuing luxury taxes that would push his cost to upwards of $30 million. But that does not mean Golden State is against signing a player to a minimum contract, particularly one that is not fully guaranteed and would provide financial flexibility.

It remains to be seen if the Golden State Warriors do end up acquiring Millsap, or whether he decides his future lies elsewhere. A prior report also listed the Brooklyn Nets as another team that’s interested in Millsap. The Warriors would definitely be a solid destination for Millsap though, and he could be very good in a leadership role for the locker room while providing solid two-way play in limited minutes.
