Following the departure of Kenny Atkinson from the Brooklyn Nets, people have started to think what’s next for the team and who will take the reins of the squad once Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant return from injuries.
Whoever lands in Barclays Center will have a very good team with Kyrie and KD as the leaders. Moreover, it looks like Irving already has a favorite candidate for the job. According to Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports, the point guard prefers his former coach, Tyronn Lue, to take over at Brooklyn.
Irving soured on Atkinson early, league sources told Yahoo Sports, and currently prefers Clippers assistant Tyronn Lue to be the team’s next head coach. Lue was the head coach in Cleveland when Irving hit the winning shot in the 2016 NBA Finals and was in talks to take the Lakers job before discussions broke down.
Jacque Vaughn will be the interim head coach until the end of the season. After that, the search for a new HC will start, but it doesn’t look like they will have to look that deep with Kyrie aiming for a reunion with Lue.
The Nets are set to be one of the animators of the Eastern Conference next year. They need a man to take all the talent they have and turn that into a championship team. You can say whatever you want about Lue, but he proved he can take a team to win the NBA title with the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers.
Right now he’s working with a contender team as part of Doc Rivers’ coaching staff in the Los Angeles Clippers.
