The Toronto Raptors are still looking for ways to improve their roster and they have set their eyes on one of the best rebounders and rim protectors in the association. The Canadian team didn’t start this season the best way and although they’re showing good teams in recent days, the job isn’t done.
That’s why they’re looking to add another piece and Drummond appears to be the perfect one for them. According to Shams Charania and Joe Vardon of The Athletic, the 2019 NBA champions are engaged in talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers, trying to get the big man to Tampa Bay, where they play the 2020/21 NBA season.
The Cavaliers and Raptors are discussing a trade that would send Andre Drummond to Toronto, sources tell The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Joe Vardon.
Drummond was pulled from the Cleveland lineup prior to Sunday’s game against the LA Clippers due to “rest.” Multiple sources said he was rested due to his “attitude and play” recently as Cleveland engages the trade market.
Drummond, 27, is averaging 17.5 points and 13.5 rebounds for the Cavaliers this season and would join a Raptors team that is last in the league in rebounds per game (42).
Drummond is in the final season of a five-year maximum contract, making $28.7 million in 2020-21. He will be a free agent after this season. Drummond was dealt to the Cavs last season at the trade deadline after 7 ½ seasons in Detroit.
Andre would be a great acquisition for the Raptors and the Cavs would get rid of one big man that could get them some good assets in return. Aron Baynes is the team’s starting center but the presence of Drummond should give them an advantage and the piece they need to take their game to the next level in a very competitive Eastern Conference.
