NBA Rumors: The Best Free Agents The Boston Celtics Should Sign

The Boston Celtics are one of the biggest dark horses to win it all this season. I mean, by no means they have the strongest team in the league but they have clearly one of the most talented rosters in the world and enough assets to pull an upset off.

Contents
  • Ryan Anderson
  • Iman Shumpert
  • Gerald Green
  • Isaiah Thomas
  • DeMarcus Cousins

But you know what they say. Even great things can be better and the Celtics aren’t the exception to that rule. They could use more size, shooting, and even another wing stopper that’ll help them match up vs. the strong Western Conference teams.

So, with that in mind and given his history, I wouldn’t be surprised if Danny Ainge were to work overtime to find another reinforcement for the winningest franchise in the league. But who should they sign to join them in Orlando? Let’s break it down:

Ryan Anderson

As we said before, the Celtics could use some size and shooting. They would also welcome veterans with playoff experience with open arms and Ryan Anderson happens to check all the boxes. He’s been out of a job for some time so he’d definitely love to have another shot.

Anderson is by no means a good defender, we all know that. He’s also a subpar rebounder for a guy his size but that’s just because of how much time he spends in the perimeter. But he’s a lights-out kind of three-point shooter that could end up being an X-Factor in Orlando.

Iman Shumpert

Iman Shumpert should be in the league and I can stretch this enough. I’ve seen far worse players being on a team’s rotation and few guys in the league can play the kind of defense Shumpert can. I know Brad Stevens would appreciate that kind of grittiness.

Shumpert’s offense vastly regressed over the past couple of seasons. The lack of touches took a toll on his three-point shooting but he’s still one of the peskiest backcourt and wing defenders available in the market. He deserves another shot, for sure.

Gerald Green

Gerald Green already knows what it takes to wear the Boston Celtics jersey. He’s expressed his desire to come back to the league following his recent injury and God knows Brad Stevens could use another offensive spark off the bench on his team.

Green isn’t going to give you much in the defensive end but we all know how explosive he can be when he gets it going. The Celtics’ second unit could use another scorer and Green has plenty of playoff experience under his belt to help them carry the load.

Isaiah Thomas

Isaiah Thomas should have never left the Boston Celtics. He gave his heart and soul to that franchise and they did him wrong by trading him for Kyrie Irving while he was still nursing the back injury he suffered trying to lead them in the playoffs.

So, it’s time for Danny Ainge to right his wrong. Isaiah Thomas is just too good of a player and teammate not to be on a roster at this point of the season. He loves Boston and Boston loves him back, and he could be a great difference-maker come playoff time.

DeMarcus Cousins

DeMarcus Cousins is the guy everybody should be calling right now. It seems like the timetable for his recovery perfectly fits the Orlando bubble so it would pretty much be up to him to decide whether he wants to play right away or not.

When healthy, Cousins is by far one of the best scorers in the league. His presence below the rim would come pretty handy for a team craving rebounding. He could even come off the bench as arguably the best substitute in the league and they could even convince him to extend his stay in the summer.
