• Former NBA player Darren Collison has high hopes for Chet Holmgren as a rookie

• Holmgren was drafted No. 2 in the 2022 NBA Draft but missed his rookie season

• Chet provides much-needed reinforcement at the center position for OKC

Chet Holmgren was dubbed a generational prospect before he even entered the NBA last season. An injury meant he wouldn’t see the floor, but he is expected to make noise in his rookie season. Former NBA player Darren Collison thinks Holmgren will progress into becoming a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate.

“I think Chet is gonna flat out amazing… If Chet continues to help [OKC] out defensively with his length and his size, he can be Defensive Player of the Year down the road. He needs to continue to work in that area, but once he’s caught on, I think he has the chance to be one of the best defensive players in the league.”

Holmgren is known as a gifted shot-blocker that can move his feet on the perimeter. Unfortunately, the NBA also now has Victor Wembanyama, who has the same skills as Chet but in a much larger frame. The pair are going to have a vicious battle over Rookie of the Year honors.

Who Wins Rookie Of The Year?

We cannot discount the possibility of players like Scoot Henderson and Brandon Miller in the race for Rookie of the Year, but most expect it to be a two-horse battle between Chet and Wembanyama.

Chet will have a better roster around him with two bonafide point guards, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey helping him get easy looks. Wembanyama will be the undisputed No. 1 option for the Spurs and put up gaudy numbers, but it may not result in winning.

The Thunder hope to make the playoffs, so if Chet is putting up big numbers, the award may be within his grasp. But ROTY is usually handed down to the most hyped prospects and it seems impossible that Wembanyama would lose out on it unless Holmgren is clearly miles better.
