In the aftermath of the trade sending Mark Williams to the Los Angeles Lakers being rescinded, the Charlotte Hornets are trying to take action. Shams Charania is reporting that the Hornets have spoken to the NBA about possible actions they can take to dispute the trade being rescinded due to a presumable failed medical.
“The Charlotte Hornets have been in contact with the NBA as they explore options to dispute the Los Angeles Lakers’ failed physical assessment of Mark Williams, sources tell ESPN. The Williams/Dalton Knecht trade was nixed Saturday, and now, Hornets weigh avenues to challenge.”
The Los Angeles Lakers sent the Charlotte Hornets Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a 2030 first-round pick-swap, and a 2031 unprotected first-round pick in exchange for Williams ahead of the trade deadline. However, they nixed the trade over the weekend after claiming that one of the conditions for the trade was not met.
Many are speculating that this condition was a failed medical, due to Williams’ murky injury and health history since joining the NBA in 2022. As a result of the trade being nixed, Williams returned to the Hornets, and Knecht, and Reddish, along with their draft assets returned to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Hornets put out a statement welcoming Williams back to the team, but interestingly, never addressed the speculation surrounding the failed trade. There does seem to be some concern that the Hornets were aware of Williams’ health issues and traded him to the Lakers anyway, thus negotiating in bad faith.
One has to imagine that the Hornets will not be successful in challenging this trade, as there were certain conditions set before the trade was finalized that needed to be met before the deal was concretized. Regardless, this is a matter worth keeping an eye on, as it could turn into an ugly situation.
