Donovan Mitchell and Jaylen Brown have been two stars on rival teams in the East all season. Brown did have the last laugh as his squad won the Final 41-25 to beat Mitchell, who was the only American on the International Stars. Jaylen put up four points (2-4 FG) in seven minutes while Donovan put up zero points (0-7 FG).
This was a lighthearted moment between the pair, but nothing of the sort will happen if they meet in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Celtics could potentially fall out of No. 2 (39-16), as they’re only 2.5 games ahead of the No. 3 seeded New York Knicks. The Cavaliers have a league-best 44-10 record, 5.5 games ahead of the Celtics.
A Playoff Preview?
Boston has the advantage of being Playoff tested, with this core being the reigning champions and also having a Conference Finals and NBA Finals appearance under their belt. The Cavaliers have two Playoff appearances with this core but one was a first-round exit in 2023 and last year was a second-round loss to the Celtics.
The Cavaliers were heavily limited due to injuries to Mitchell and Jarrett Allen, so they’ll hope to have no excuses this season. They’ve been the better team this year and they added wing De’Andre Hunter at the trade deadline. Hunter is the ideal 3-and-D forward for the team, making them look like even bigger threats to Boston.
Jaylen Brown is averaging 22.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.8 assists this season while Donovan Mitchell is averaging 23.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists. They are closely matched and will be nipping at each other’s heels for a spot on the All-NBA squad this season. With Mitchell having the seed advantage while being the clear No. 1 option on his squad, it seems voters might lean his way.
Brown is the reigning Finals MVP, so he’ll be the man to look out for in the postseason. The Cavaliers do have the defenders required to stop Brown and Jayson Tatum, with Hunter and Evan Mobley likely matched up on them respectively. Mitchell will also have his share of possessions defending Brown, so it’ll be funny to see this trash-talk return in a Playoff matchup.
They won’t be joking with each other when the stakes are high, but it was great to see this moment in the All-Star game.
