The Dallas Mavericks suffered a huge blow in Monday’s game against the Sacramento Kings, as Kyrie Irving went down with a serious-looking left knee injury. Irving had to be helped off the court, and Dr. Evan Jeffries, DPT, shared the best and worst-case scenario concerning that knee injury on X.

– Best case scenario: Hyperextension/bone bruise

– Worst case scenario: ACL tear

Jeffries later explained his reasoning behind those scenarios.

“The play looked pretty bad,” Jeffries said. “Kyrie Irving was driving to the basket, and he lands on his left heel, and you can see his knee hyperextend. Buckles pretty bad. The Mavs are now calling it a knee sprain, which is also concerning ’cause whenever you think about a sprain, you gotta look at the ligaments.

“So, most concering right now you’d be thinking about the ACL but also the PCL based on hyperextension of the knee,” Jeffries added. “… For right now, my best case scenario is that it’s a hyperextension/bone bruise. The worst-case scenario, it’s a ligament issue, in particular, the ACL or [PCL].”

There has also been some talk online about Irving tearing his quad tendon, but Jeffries doesn’t believe that is the case. Deepak Chona, MD., however, isn’t ruling out the possibility of a ruptured quad tendon.

“(1) His left quad ‘jumps’ before it hits the ground. Seen in tendon ruptures

(2) Knee lands in hyperextension, putting ACL/LCL/meniscus at risk

Hopefully wrong, but not expecting great news.”

The Mavericks will be praying this is just a hyperextension for Irving, who is averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in 2024-25. They’ve been ravaged by injuries in recent weeks, but based on what Jeffries and Chona have stated, this has the potential to be the biggest blow they’ve suffered.

Irving valiantly stayed in the game to sink two free throws after suffering that injury, and that could be his last contribution on the court this season. If the worst-case scenario does come to be, or even if he misses most of the 20 games remaining in the regular season, the Mavericks’ season is all but over.

The Mavericks had been relying heavily on Irving after parting with Luka Doncic, and the burden on his shoulders only increased when the likes of Anthony Davis and P.J. Washington went down with injuries. If the 32-year-old is out for an extended period, too, now, then it’s hard to see how this team stays afloat.

The Kings ended up blowing out the Mavericks 122-98 at American Airlines Center to drop them to 32-30 on the season. It was their fourth loss in the last five games, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they keep losing moving forward. The Mavericks will be in action next against the Milwaukee Bucks at Fiserv Forum on Wednesday at 8 PM ET.
