Luka Doncic’s Father Slams And Calls Out The Dallas Mavericks: “Hypocrisy”

Luka Doncic's father, Sasa Doncic, slammed the Dallas Mavericks for ruthlessly trading their 25-year-old franchise superstar to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Luka Doncic getting traded by the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers is a sports story that might never be topped. It came out of absolutely nowhere and has wrecked an entire fanbase, with Mavericks fans still in shock at what their franchise did. Someone who was even more shocked was Luka’s father, Sasa Doncic.

While appearing on Arena Sport Slovenia alongside reporter Iztok Franko, Sasa Doncic laid into the Mavericks organization for how they’ve discarded his son, pointedly mocking Nico Harrison and the decision the organization has made despite Luka’s love for the city.

“I understand there comes a certain moment where you don’t like a philosophy. All good, I get it. All I think is, this secrecy from all these individuals and the hypocrisy with this trade hurts me personally. I think Luka absolutely did not deserve this. I know he sacrificed a lot.”

“I know Luka really respected Dallas. He respected the whole city, he helped children and it was not a problem for him to go to hospitals and charity events. It wasn’t even a problem last year. I’m saying again, one individual believes he’s not fit enough. He played 100 games last season for like 40 minutes per game, constantly being doubled.

“I feel that this is really unfair from certain people from Dallas. You stand by your actions, excuses, and alibies. That’s it.”

I think the entire city of Dallas would wholeheartedly agree with Sasa’s feelings right now.

Luka has done everything he can for the organization in the last six-and-a-half years, so trading him without warning or even discussing it with the larger organizations was shocking. The Mavs were worried about tanking his value when they had already traded him for pennies.

It still hasn’t sunk in for many, as Doncic is a generation-defining talent who will now play for the most famous franchise in basketball. The Mavericks are likely going to be left holding the bag for an all-time bad decision unless they somehow win a championship this very season with their aging core on an imperfect roster.

Doncic averaged 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists for the Mavericks this season, expecting to return from a Christmas Day calf injury on February 8. He’s expected to return after the All-Star break for the Lakers, but he was nearing a return to the court for the Mavs.

Luka averaged 28.6 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists over his time in Dallas, joining the history books for the third-highest scoring average in NBA history behind Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan. He has a bunch of franchise records to his name, including most points scored in a single game, but most all-time statistics will continue to have Dirk Nowitzki’s name all over them.

Doncic is a DFW legend who’s adored by the community. They’re struggling to come to terms with this loss, which clearly Luka is himself alongside his father.
