Aaron Gordon was expecting an invite to join Team USA this summer at the Paris Olympic Games. But even after getting not a call, Gordon still had fun watching his Nuggets teammate Nikola Jokic torch the competition.

“I was asked about playing for Team USA then the call never came,” said Gordon in a team press conference. “So there was a little bit of salt there. Then watching Jokic take them to the wire like that, almost wash those cats… that was dope. But all that being said, Merica.”

Apparently, Gordon was asked about potentially joining Team USA but they managed to fill up the roster before giving him consideration. Instead, as LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Joel Embiid united together in Paris, Gordon had to sit back and watch it all play out from behind the screen.

In Gordon’s view, Nikola Jokic is already one of the greatest players ever and it was a joy for him to watch the Serbian legend give USA the business. In fact, with a potential contract extension looming, Aaron Gordon made sure to let the media know where his loyalties lie.

“I really love this organization,” Gordon said. “I love the layers on this team, love the coaches. I hope we get it done. It seems like it’s moving forward in the right direction.”

After spending his first 7 seasons on the Orlando Magic, Aaron Gordon didn’t come close to competing for a championship until he was in his late 20s. Since joining the Nuggets in 2021, however, Gordon has enjoyed property in a spot beside the NBA’s best center, 3x MVP Nikola Jokic.

“Winning inspires me,” said Gordon. “I think Nikola Jokic is probably going to go down as one of the best to ever play the game. Working my tail off, working my ass off to maximize his time in the NBA.”

The Denver Nuggets are one of the favorites to come out of the West this season, and that’s due in large part to Jokic. The superstar big man is a master with the ball and after averaging 20.9 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game on 55.7% shooting, he’s poised to deliver one of his best seasons yet.

Jokic was even better during the Olympics when he carried Serbia all the way to the Semi-Finals while averaging 18.8 points, 10.7 rebounds, 8.7 assists, and two steals per game on 53.8% shooting. Against Team USA, he put up 20 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, and four steals in 31 minutes.

Sadly for Jokic, his performance wasn’t enough to give Serbia the edge in the game but his dominance surely gave them a fighting chance and there was a point down the stretch where the outcome could have gone either way.

Just like the rest of us at home, Aaron Gordon was watching it all unfold and he couldn’t contain his excitement knowing that he’d get to call this guy his teammate for the next few years to come.

This upcoming season will be another chance for the Nuggets to take control of the West and establish themselves as a dynasty in the league for years to come. But with just one championship under their belt, the Nuggets are actively striving for more and Aaron Gordon is committing to doing whatever he can to make it happen.
