Dennis Schroder was traded by the Brooklyn Nets to the Golden State Warriors, marking the third time in four years he’s had to switch teams midseason. Trades uproot players’ families, which has to be a challenge for Schroder’s family with his six-year-old son, Dennis Jr. However, his father’s latest trade has him excited.

During his introductory press conference, Dennis revealed that his son was excited to hear about this latest trade as it means his father will finally be playing for a good team again.

“My wife told him that we got traded, and he asked, ‘Where we going?’ And we said Golden State, and he was like, ‘Oh, we’re lucky now, at least it’s a good team.’ That was the first thing, and I had to laugh and I was in a bad mood.”

Schroder also revealed that Dennis Jr. is a huge Stephen Curry fan and is excited to meet him.

“He’s a Steph Curry fan, we battled in London as well for the national team for the NBA showcase. We got to see him there and then of course in Paris, he’s a big fan. He watches every game, all he does is basketball, and he’s gonna be thrilled to see him. Even when yesterday I came, he asked me if Steph Curry was there. I was like, ‘you’re not even going to ask how I’m doing?'”

Schroder’s son being excited about this trade is uplifting, as he’s seen his father move teams regularly over his lifetime. Dennis Jr. was born when his father was playing for the OKC Thunder in 2019 before switching to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.

A rough stint with the Lakers that year led to him joining the Boston Celtics in 2021 before being traded mid-season to the Houston Rockets. He rejoined the Lakers for the 2022-23 season, avoiding any midseason changes as the Lakers made a Conference Finals run.

This netted Schroder a sizable contract with the Toronto Raptors in 2023 free agency, but Schroder’s time in Toronto soured quickly as he was traded last winter to the Brooklyn Nets. He’s been playing well on the Nets since joining in February 2024, but will now get ready to move his family back out to the West Coast for the Warriors.

Outside the 2022-23 Lakers, Schroder hasn’t played for a Playoff team over these years, with even the Celtics struggling when they had him. They made an NBA Finals run after trading him away in 2022 to the Rockets, who were also tanking.

Schroder is averaging 18.4 points and 6.6 assists this season, helping the Nets be far more competitive than initially anticipated. He’s expected to be a starter on the Warriors, likely forming the team’s backcourt alongside Stephen Curry after a rotating cast of guards have started alongside Curry all season.

This season is crucial for Dennis as he will once again be a free agent in the summer. After all the moves he’s had to make over the last few seasons, he’ll hope he can impress Golden State enough to hand him a contract extension or for a Western team to sign him in free agency.

For now, Schroder will hope to provide solid guard play for the Warriors as they look to climb up the standings after going 2-8 over their last 10 games with an overall record of 14-11.
