The Charlotte Hornets are under fire this week for their scummy actions with a young die-hard fan. After giving away a PlayStation 5 to one lucky kid during a halftime event, the team allegedly took back the prize off-camera and left the kid with nothing but a jersey. After the story went public, the Hornets issued a statement to apologize and revealed their efforts to make it right.
“During last night’s game, there was an on-court skit that missed the mark. The skit included bad decision making and poor communication,” wrote the Hornets in a statement. “Simply put, we turned the ball over and we apologize. We have reached out to the family and are committed to not only making it right but exceeding expectations. We will be providing the fan with the PS5 that he should have taken home last night all along with a VIP experience to a future game. Our goal is and will remain to elevate the guest experience for every person that enters Spectrum Center, and to show our fans how much we appreciate their relentless support.”
The Hornets are a pretty small-market franchise and most of what happens with the team falls under the radar of the NBA community. But in this case, the Hornets went viral with fans from all over the country chiming in to give their honest take.
“How is this a “skit” when the punchline is “jk kid, here’s a 25 dollar hoodie” that’s a terrible punchline,” wrote one X user.
Whoever thought it was a good idea to take back a prize that was rightfully won by a child had a serious lapse in judgment but unfortunately, it’s not the only time that we’ve seen this. As some pointed out, a similar thing happened with the Sacramento Kings in front of a half-tine crowd.
“At least they took it away off camera unlike the Timberwolves to this kid lmao,” wrote one fan remembering the video.
Nobody knows what actually happened here, but not everyone is convinced that it was an accident. Some believe that the Hornets may have planned out the PS5 swap and only apologized after getting caught.
“Absolutely disgusting. Only apologized because they got caught,” wrote one user on X.
Of course, the Hornets are already a somewhat underachieving team and they have a reputation for being one of the worst franchises in the entire NBA. This scandal has just given the fans another reason to detest the franchise.
“Hornets continue to be the cheapest organization in pro sports,” wrote one fan.
All in all, it’s a pretty bad look for the Hornets to be lying and deceiving their own fanbase like that but you have to give them some credit for at least trying to make it right. Sadly, it will take some time for their reputation to recover but hopefully, some winning on the court will help make up for some of their transgressions.
At 13th in the East this season, the Hornets are once again headed to the lottery and yet they still have a solid base of loyal fans who show up and cheer for them every home game. The Hornets need to do right by those fans when they can because we all know that they haven’t given them much to cheer for on the court.
