During the third quarter of Friday’s game between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center, Draymond Green intentionally tripped Zach Edey. Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins wasn’t too happy with the play and seemed to take a bit of a shot at Steve Kerr and the Warriors by suggesting a code was broken.
Green didn’t take too kindly to what Jenkins had to say, as evidenced by his comment on the post.
“Shut Up.”
Green also put out a story on Instagram where he called Jenkins a marshmallow.
“Boo! (I was trying [to] find a marshmallow emoji).”
Safe to say, there is no love lost here. Green believes Jenkins is soft for making that comment and here is all that the Grizzlies head coach had to say about the incident.
“Overall, thought he was really good,” Jenkins said. “And very disappointing, there was that one play, we were about to start the break and he’s been playing really hard to try to outlet, and Draymond grabs his leg and pulls him down and it doesn’t get reviewed. So I know there’s a code in this league, and I don’t understand how that wasn’t reviewed. Very disappointing.”
This “code” of course has some significance when it comes to the Grizzlies and the Warriors. When the two teams met in the Western Conference Semifinals in 2022, Dillon Brooks committed a flagrant foul on Gary Payton II in Game 2, which led to a fractured elbow. After that game, Kerr stated Brooks broke the code.
“But there’s a code in this league, there’s a code that players follow,” Kerr said. “Where you never put a guy’s season or career in jeopardy. Like taking somebody out in midair and clubbing them across the head, and ultimately fracturing Gary’s elbow. You don’t hit a guy when he’s in midair, club him and break his elbow. That’s where the line is.”
I’d find it hard to believe that Jenkins wasn’t taking a shot at Kerr by bringing up the code. As for the two incidents, I do consider them to be dirty plays. Brooks was rightfully ejected from that game but Green initially escaped punishment here, much to Jenkins’ displeasure.
The officials deemed it was just a transition take foul by Green, which boggled my mind. The NBA then reviewed the incident afterward and announced on Saturday that it had been upgraded to a Flagrant 1. It is the four-time All-Star’s first flagrant foul of the season and something tells me it won’t be his last.
While Green got away with that act during the game, he did land himself in some trouble later. The 34-year-old received two technicals toward the end of the fourth quarter and got ejected.
As for the game itself, the Warriors won 123-118 to improve to 10-2 on the season and 2-0 in the NBA Cup. Green put up 13 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, one steal, and one block in the contest.
The Warriors will take on the Los Angeles Clippers next at the Intuit Dome on Monday at 10:30 PM ET and here’s hoping Green stays out of trouble in that game.
