Draymond Green spoke in a candid interview with NBC Sports Bay Area. When talking about how his reputation is always under attack from fans and analysts, Green addressed how much things of that nature upset him. The narrative that bothered him the most was people assuming his aggressive demeanor on the court was responsible for him being violent towards his wife and children, which is just not true.

“For my character to be under attack, that bothered me to my core because the things that were being said isn’t an accurate depiction of me and who I am. So, I would say that was the bottom. I couldn’t play the game that I love. I couldn’t play the game the way that I love.”

“And by the way, ‘He’s beating his wife at home. He’s beating his kids because look what he does on a basketball court.’ That’s crazy… To have to live through that. But then, for my family to also have to live through that, that was kind of rock bottom for me. Like my wife opening her Instagram and [seeing] ‘I’m so sorry’ [comments]. ‘I know you’re getting beaten at home.’”

“Beaten? I’m the guy that, when my wife is on one, I walk into the other room. I don’t even want to go back and forth like that. It’s not even in my demeanor. I think it’s because people watch me on the basketball court and my intensity. I am probably as non-confrontational as you going to find. I’m going the opposite way.”

One can understand why such a narrative or rumor would upset Green so much. Draymond met his wife, Hazel Renee, at an acting class at Michigan State University, but they did not begin dating right away. The pair only began dating after reconnecting in 2017, years after they had established their careers in the NBA and Hollywood, respectively.

He proposed to the musician/actress in 2019, and they welcomed their first child together (both Draymond and Hazel have other children outside of their relationship) in 2020. In 2022, Green and Renee would tie the knot, and by 2023, they would have another child named Hunni.

Draymond has another son, Draymond Green Jr., born in 2016, whom he parents with former partner Jelissa Hardy. Aside from this, Green is also the stepfather of Renee’s child from her previous relationship, Olive.

On the basketball court, Draymond is no saint. But to presume that he violently attacks his wife and children at home just because he has a tendency to get aggressive against players is a massive overreaction. We have seen and heard nothing but positive things about Green’s relationship with his wife and children, and he always speaks and interacts with them very lovingly.

While that is no sure sign of a peaceful home life, it does warrant Green getting the benefit of the doubt from cynical fans. It is never right to make these kinds of assertions about people, regardless of how you feel about them, as these are very serious allegations that can not only derail someone’s career but, more importantly, can significantly impact their personal lives.
