Stephen Curry Admits He Wanted To Break Klay Thompson’s Single-Game 3-Point Record During 52-Point Explosion

Stephen Curry could've taken the single-game three-point record from former teammate Klay Thompson in his 52-point performance against the Grizzlies.

The Golden State Warriors picked up a very important 134-125 win over the Memphis Grizzlies tonight, catapulted to the win by 52 points from Stephen Curry. It was Curry’s second 50-point game of the season as he sank 12 three-pointers in the process. This was the third time in his career that Curry made 12 three-pointers in a single game, with the record belonging to former teammate Klay Thompson with 14.

In his post-game interview, Curry admitted he thought about breaking Klay’s record when he had 12 at the start of the fourth quarter. However, the Grizzlies stayed competitive, so Curry had to ignore the record to try and seal the win.

“The first two 3s of the fourth quarter. I definitely was thinking about Klay and Chicago. This is the closest I’ve been with the amount of time left. But after that, reality check, we gotta win the game, so you don’t want to sabotage anything.”

Curry did try to break the record in the fourth but had naturally cooled off over the course of the game. He scored just seven points (2-8 FG) and made one three-pointer in five attempts in the final 12 minutes, so he was correct in abandoning chucking shots for better winning basketball.

He ended the game with 52 points (16-31 FG, 12-20 3P), 10 rebounds, eight assists, and five steals.

Thompson set the record in October 2018 in a game against the Chicago Bulls. The performance is still remembered, especially by Curry, who was on the court alongside Klay when he set that record by converting 14 three-pointers in a 149-124 win.

This was the third time in Steph’s career he ended a game with 12 made three-pointers. Funnily, it’s the second time he’s achieved it this season, making 12 during a 56-point performance against the Orlando Magic in February. The other instance comes from a 2016 performance against the OKC Thunder.

Steph has one career game with 13 three-pointers made, his career-high. This happened in November 2016 in a game against the New Orleans Pelicans and existed as the record for most single-game threes until Klay would break it less than two years later.

Thompson might not be alongside Curry on the court, but the pair will always share a strong bond over their once-in-a-generation shooting ability.
