Stephen Curry is confirmed to have suffered a pelvic contusion but luckily avoided any structural damage during his fall against the Toronto Raptors. NBA insider Shams Charania is reporting Curry is set to miss at least a few games of the Golden State Warriors road trip, starting with their Saturday night game against the Atlanta Hawks, as he receives medical attention for his contusion.
Curry suffered a hard fall when driving to the basket during the Warriors 117-114 win over the Raptors, colliding with two opposing players before falling back-first to the ground. He was immediately seen clutching at his back in pain and was quickly taken out of the game. Steve Kerr mentioned later that Curry wanted to return, but the team decided against it as a precautionary measure.
This injury blow is bad for the Warriors, but it could have been so much worse. Losing Curry for a few games is way better than losing him for a few months or the rest of the season. If anything, it could be a blessing in disguise, as Kerr recently mentioned that Curry was exhausted after carrying the Warriors for so many months of the season. That fatigue was definitely starting to show in Curry’s performances.
And this injury coming right now rather than earlier in the season is much better for the Warriors, as now, they have Jimmy Butler to carry the load in Curry’s absence, something they could not have said just a few months ago. Trading for Butler gave the Warriors a new lease on life, and they have been absolutely phenomenal since he joined the team.
After Curry went down with the injury last night, Butler stepped up, delivering a triple-double for the Warriors with 16 points (4-15 FG), 11 rebounds, 12 assists, two steals, and two blocks. Despite not shooting the ball well, Butler showed how valuable a player he is by impacting several different aspects of the game and leading the Warriors to a narrow but important win over the Raptors.
Since acquiring Butler, the Warriors have a 16-2 record and are playing some of their best basketball of the season. The former Miami Heat star is also carrying his weight, averaging 17.2 points, 6.4 assists, 6.2 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game while shooting 43.5% from the field, 24.3% from beyond the arc, and 86.1% from the free-throw line.
Stephen Curry has also improved since Butler arrived, averaging 27.4 points, 5.4 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game while shooting 47.7% from the field, 40.6% from deep, and 90.6% from the charity stripe. These numbers are a vast improvement over what he was averaging prior to the Warriors trading for Butler.
The hope right now is that Curry can make a speedy recovery and join the Warriors reinvigorated and with his legs underneath him once again. With no major complications coming with his injury, fans of the Warriors can breathe a sigh of relief.
