Devin Booker found himself at the center of a controversy after a viral video appeared to show him criticizing Lakers rookie Bronny James during a preseason game. In the video, Booker was seen mouthing words courtside after Bronny missed two consecutive free throws, with fans speculating what he said. The clip quickly spread across social media, with over 50,000 likes on X (formerly Twitter).

However, Booker swiftly addressed the rumors, taking to social media to clap back at the accusations, saying:

“50k of y’all need help.”

This incident is not the first time Bronny James, the son of NBA legend LeBron James, has been the target of harsh scrutiny or baseless rumors. Despite being a young player still finding his footing in the league, fans and analysts alike have placed an intense spotlight on Bronny, with many quick to pass judgment on his abilities and potential. Booker’s response was aimed at clearing up any misinterpretation, as he wasn’t trash-talking Bronny and wanted to distance himself from the rumors.

Devin Booker’s rebuttal highlights the pressure and overzealous scrutiny Bronny James faces as he enters his rookie season. The speculation around his performance has been ongoing since his Summer League appearances, where he, too, faced criticism.

Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown was similarly embroiled in a rumor during the Summer League when fans accused him of stating that Bronny wasn’t fit for the NBA. Like Booker, Brown had to set the record straight, voicing his support for Bronny’s growth and potential in the league.

Booker’s quick dismissal of the allegations shows how easily things can spiral out of context in the social media age. Even when a player is caught mouthing words on camera, fans and pundits can quickly jump to conclusions. The fact that 50,000 people liked the video without concrete evidence speaks to how fast misinformation can spread, especially when it involves high-profile players like Booker and Bronny.

As the son of the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, Bronny has inevitably inherited a tremendous weight of expectations. However, despite the rumors, he has shown glimpses of his potential. In the Lakers‘ preseason finale, Bronny posted 17 points on 7-for-17 shooting, an encouraging sign for a young player working to carve out his own path.

While Bronny’s journey has been far from smooth, with occasional ups and downs, he continues to have support from his family, teammates, and respected figures like Magic Johnson.

Booker’s response also reflects a broader issue in the NBA landscape—how players are scrutinized for every move, both on and off the court. Social media often amplifies minor interactions, and in Bronny’s case, being the son of LeBron James magnifies that attention tenfold. For Booker, the false narrative around his supposed comment likely felt unnecessary, prompting him to shut it down quickly.

Ultimately, Booker’s swift and clear rebuttal highlights the importance of not jumping to conclusions based on brief moments captured out of context. As for Bronny, he continues to work on developing his game, hoping to live up to his immense potential while navigating the pressures that come with his famous last name.
