LeBron James was front and center in a new ad for Hennessey after the iconic liquor brand partnered with the NBA’s all-time leading scorer to release a special LeBron-themed bottle for a suggested retail price of $53.99. In the new ad, James walks out of a press conference, making a callback to when he did the same after Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals.

“1765, I am chilling with Rashard Hennessey. I mean, I call him Rich, but don’t tell him that. He gives me the idea to start a whiskey brand somewhere in Ireland. I’m like, ‘Rich, you know what will be crazy? You need to do cognac instead of whisky and instead of Ireland, we need to go to France.’ Just like that, that’s how Hennessey got started.”

The ad is also clearly playing into the internet joke about LeBron lying about historical moments with how he claims to have been ‘chilling’ with the founder of the brand in 1765. James is willing to laugh at himself over the same points brought up by his fanbase and others over recent years.

The LeBron Hennessey bottle took the internet by storm when it was released, with many fans affectionately calling it ‘LeHennessey.’  According to Laetitia Laplace, global marketing vice president at Hennessy, the brand intends to tap into the ‘internet lore’ around LeBron with this collaboration.

“Leaning into his unique personality and tone, his distinctive way of expressing himself on social, and the infinite internet lore around him, we allowed the world to witness what we created through the most authentic lens possible: LeBron himself.”

James has been a longtime fan of Hennessey and has worked with the brand for previous collaborations as well. Hennessey was one of the primary drinks of choice for the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers after they won the NBA title with a remarkable 3-1 comeback over the 73-9 Golden State Warriors

James shared an Instagram reel earlier in the offseason of him sipping on Hennessey while reading a book called ‘The First Page,’ leaning into another internet joke around LeBron always being on the first page of books when he’s seen reading something.

This partnership is unique and fun, but James might need to put the booze down ahead of the start of the 2024-25 NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers, which will mark his 22nd as an NBA player.
