Lakers legend LeBron James felt helpless as he watched his son, Bronny, experience the worst medical scare of his young career. When he reflected on the incident for his newest Netflix docuseries with Uninterrupted, James detailed the recovery process and shared the pride in his son’s determination to bounce back.

Savannah James: “I think at the end of the day it was just about supporting each other and just being super grateful for the outcome.”

LeBron James: “Shoutout to the man above. To the whole coaching staff, training staff, members of the [USC] program… They’re the reason Bronny is alive now and smiling, and thriving, and doing what any 19-year-old should be doing and that’s living out their dream. It’s crazy with kids because if they love something and they want something that’s all that matters. As a parent, you’re like ‘You had a cardiac arrest.’ In his mind, he’s like ‘Can I or can I not play basketball again? And if the answer is yes, when can I?’ I love that…”

The clip comes from episode 4 of the new “Starting Five” series on Netflix, which features a behind-the-scenes view of some of the game’s most polarizing stars. James is a regular star in the series, joining Jimmy Butler, Domantas Sabonis, Anthony Edwards, and Jayson Tatum.

The segment involving Bronny and his cardiac arrest was the most emotional of the entire show so far not just for the inspiring story itself, but for the reactions from LeBron and Savannah. They were clearly shaken up by the ordeal, and it’s hard to blame them for that.

At the time, Bronny was a perfectly healthy young man and a lifelong athlete with no history of health issues. So for him to suddenly collapse on the court and require CPR was completely unexpected. After the initial incident, people worried for Bronny’s safety and wondered if he would ever play basketball again.

Thanks to the quick-thinking of the medical staff and the folks over at USC, Bronny was able to avoid any permanent damage and he went on to make a full recovery. And while the exact reasoning behind his cardiac arrest is not totally clear (congenital heart defect), there’s nothing to suggest that Bronny is taking any serious risks by continuing his playing career.

James was able to return to the court relatively quickly after the heart attack and he went on to finish a modest season at USC with averages of 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game on 36% shooting. Now that he’s in the clear, there are no more excuses for his future development. It’s up to Bronny to prove himself now and he’s got all the tools to have a successful NBA career.

Alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Bronny will get to play off some elite talent and he’ll have head coach JJ Redick to help guide him along the way. This moment has been a long time coming for Bronny and he wasn’t going to let anything get in the way of his ultimate dream.

Of course, the hard work is only just beginning and it will be a long and intense process before James Jr. begins to scratch the surface of his basketball potential. The fact that he’s made it this far, in the face of grave challenges, is a great sign and he’s already earned the confidence of so many people.
