Luka Doncic has garnered comparisons to some of the legends of the game due to his unique style of play. While speaking at the 22nd Basketball Without Borders camp in Manchester, former NBA champion Tyson Chandler shared his thoughts on the Los Angeles Lakers guard by comparing him to another franchise legend, Magic Johnson.

Chandler worked with Doncic as a development coach with the Dallas Mavericks. Having gauged the Slovenian’s talent, he said:

“Luka was one of the best players I’ve ever seen on the court and in practice. Of course, we all see what Luka does in the game, but I’m speaking about practice, because it’s very difficult to impress your peers. Luka does things that I’ve never seen before.”

“I would always call him Luka Magic because he reminded me of a European version of Magic Johnson. This new age, Luka is his own player, but Magic was the older generation of somebody with a smile that was the killer. They’d come out there and destroy you, win games, but with a big smile. He’s just such a joy to watch, and I love watching him. Nothing but great things to say about Luka.”

It is evident from Chandler’s account of Doncic that the former NBA champ holds the star in very high regard. A comparison to a legend like Johnson is truly fitting, primarily due to the striking similarities in their style of play.

Johnson was a pioneer in his own right. As a bigger point guard, the Lakers legend blended versatility and agility with flamboyant playmaking. Naturally, this paired well in the spotlight of Los Angeles. Similarly, Doncic brings something unique to the game.

The 26-year-old is extremely skillful with the ball in his hands. From his ingenuity in orchestrating the offense to his unpredictable scoring rhythm, Doncic is an offensive mastermind.

While flattering, a comparison to Johnson also brings added pressure. The legendary point guard was one of the most successful players for the Purple and Gold. Having won five NBA titles, Johnson raised the standard of expectations for superstars. In this regard, Doncic faces lofty expectations.

The 26-year-old has indicated a desire to overcome the weight of these expectations. With the intention of bringing a championship to the city, Doncic has put in the necessary work in the offseason to ensure he will be in the best condition to achieve this.

In addition to Doncic’s individual efforts, the Lakers have also made the necessary moves to surround their star with a talented supporting cast. Having acquired some key rotation pieces in the offseason, Doncic and the Purple and Gold appear to be poised for a solid campaign.
