As one of the greatest names in hip-hop, and an avid basketball fan, it’s no surprise that Drake considered himself a friend of Lakers star LeBron James. But after Drake unfollowed the 4x champion on social media today, some fans are re-thinking what they know about the pair’s cryptic relationship.

Drake, 37, is a world-renowned music artist who is considered by some to be the greatest in his genre. The rapping icon is as wealthy and famous as they come and is one of the few people on the planet who can relate to LeBron’s celebrity status.

Drake is a well-known Raptors fan and has proudly cheered the team on from his hometown in Toronto, Canada. Over the years, he’s gotten to watch LeBron at his best when he was beating the Raptors in the playoffs and he was there when the Raptors finally broke the cycle and won the championship in 2019.

Sometime between then and now, Drake’s ties with LeBron have dwindled to the point where he no longer even considers it worthy to keep up on social media. The two weren’t “close” by any means but they’ve met several times and have been caught being friendly toward each other in the past. And while it’s weird that Drake suddenly decided to cut ties with the guy, we now know that LeBron isn’t the only one.

It turns out that Drake went on a mini unfollow spree on Tuesday afternoon and James was one of a few notable celebrities to get unfollowed. Some of the others are DeMar DeRozan, Playboi Carti, Rick Ross, Kendrick Lamar, and Joe Budden.

Nobody knows why Drake decided to do this at this moment, but the timing seems off considering that Drake was just seen hanging with LeBron and Bronny recently. Last year, he even brought them both out to surprise a crowd during a show in Las Vegas.

Perhaps with LeBron heading toward retirement, Drake has already moved on to forge bonds with other celebrities. Or maybe he’s just gotten tired of the propaganda surrounding James and his son.

With Bronny now in the NBA, he’s become the focal point of the Lakers’ plans and they will look to focus on his development over the next four years. Now that NBA media day has begun, we are getting the first glimpses of the new Lakers duo and it’s really just the start of their journey together.

At 39 years old now, LeBron’s focus is entirely on his family and it’s likely he didn’t even notice Drake’s latest social media activity. With just a few years left on the Lakers, LeBron wants to make them count and he’s committed to ending things as a champion.

This season, he and Bronny will be looking to make a statement and only time will tell if we ever find out what happened with Drake. For now, the two are severing ties and it might be best for everyone involved.
