The relationship between Jimmy Butler and Miami Heat President Pat Riley is beyond repair, and Bam Adebayo is caught in the middle. As he and his team wait out the upcoming Butler trade, Bam says he has no choice but to keep going and try to win games despite internal chaos.
“It’s disappointing when you see the organization and a player going head to head like that,” Bam Adebayo said on Saturday, via The Miami Herald. “But the rest of us got to figure out how to win games. So for me as captain, it’s worrying about the other guys and getting them locked in and ready to go to try to compete and win a game.”
It’s been nothing but stress for the Heat ever since Jimmy Butler made his trade request earlier this season. The 6x All-Star has been with the Heat since 2019 when he chose them over re-signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. During his tenure, he’s had some amazing success as the leader of the franchise with two Finals appearances and individual averages of 21.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game on 49.9% shooting.
As the embodiment of ‘Heat Culture’ Butler had grown attached to the franchise and dreamed of ending his career with Pat Riley and the Miami Heat. But after a disappointing exit in last year’s playoffs, and a failure to negotiate an extension on Butler’s contract over the summer, the situation has become volatile with the Heat and both sides have agreed to part ways.
As the Heat look for a trade for Butler, instability and uncertainty will define the locker room. It’ll be up to Erik Spoelstra and new team captain Bam Adebayo to weather the storm and keep the Heat competitive for the next few years to come.

Without Butler, those numbers will surely improve but it remains it be seen if Bam alone is enough to keep the Heat relevant in the East.
As someone with attachments to both sides, the Butler saga has been hard for Bam but all he can do is watch how it plays out as he takes care of business on the court. Butler or no Butler, Bam’s job does not change. This could be an opportunity for him to take his game to a different level and become the leading star the Heat need him to be.
