With just weeks to go before the new NBA season, Karl-Anthony Towns received news that changed his career. Now, as a member of the New York Knicks, Towns is reflecting on his past and the people who watched him develop into a basketball star.
“Nine years ago, I arrived in Minnesota as a young man with a dream. Little did I know that this place would become my home, and its people would become my family. Your love, support, and unwavering loyalty have fueled my journey and inspired me to be the best player I could be,” wrote Towns on X.
“Thank you to my teammates, coaches, and the entire Timberwolves organization for the countless opportunities and experiences. I’ll cherish the friendships I’ve made and the battles we’ve fought together. To the incredible fans, your support has meant the world to me. It gave me strength on and off the court. I’ll never forget it. You’ll always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for everything — KAT.”
Timberwolves fans were stunned by the Towns trade and many still feel that the team made a mistake by giving away their former franchise player. It was he and Anthony Edwards after all, who led the Wolves to their best season since the Kevin Garnett era.
Since 2015, when he was drafted by the Wolves with the first overall pick, Towns has been fiercely loyal to the franchise and he’s gotten comfortable in the city of Minneapolis after pouring millions to help his neighbors and build up the community.
With career averages of 22.9 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game on 52.4% shooting, Towns developed into a true All-Star and one of the best big offensive men in the game. After his first few seasons with Edwards, which showed remarkable potential, experts agreed that the Timberwolves were certain to run it back and build on their chemistry.
Instead, they shocked the world by trading Towns, once considered the face of their team, in a deal for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. The move adds depth for the Timberwolves and gives them some added flexibility in the rotation.
Towns was initially shocked by the trade and spent hours in the gym letting the news soak in. But he also realized that this “fresh start” is in a big-market destination where he can grow his brand and be a part of something unforgettable. he had no plans or desire to leave the Timberwolves but at least now he’ll have a chance to shine in a frontcourt of his own alongside a point guard who can stretch the floor and hit big shots in the clutch.
At 28 years old, Towns’ best years may still be yet to come and it could be enough for the Knicks to finally cement themselves as a favorite in the East. At the very least, with Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Towns, the Knicks are on par with the Celtics and 76ers as the elites of the East.
Only time will tell how this trade pays off for either side but the NBA is a business and it’s up to the players to make the most of it. As much as Towns wanted to stick around with Edwards and the Timberwolves, he has a chance for something different now and it might just end up being the best thing for his career.
