San Antonio Spurs stars Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul were hilariously disqualified from the 2025 NBA Skills Challenge for trying to circumvent the rules. Wembanyama and Paul were hoping to save time by not actually attempting shots during the challenge and while that was genius, it was also apparently illegal.

You are not required to make a shot from any of the spots to advance, so Wembanyama and Paul decided they were just going to throw the ball up to save time. They were booed for it but did get the job done quickly with a time of 47.9 seconds. Their joy was short-lived, though, as they were soon informed that they were disqualified.
Neither Paul nor Wembanyama were too happy about that. An NBA official even showed up in front of them with a rule book to explain why they got disqualified but the explanation didn’t convince both men.

TNT’s Allie LaForce tried to get Paul’s thoughts on the decision but wasn’t allowed to interview him.

This was a hilarious turn of events and you’d think Paul was the mastermind behind the decision to hack the Skills Challenge in that manner. It turns out, though, that he wasn’t. Wembanyama revealed afterward that he came up with the idea.
“Victor Wembanyama said the Team Spurs plan for the Skills competition — which wound up getting them disqualified — was his idea.”
That was surprising, to say the least. You’d have put a lot of money on Paul being behind this, but it was the Frenchman who came up with the sneaky idea. Unfortunately for him, it backfired.
Alex Sarr and Zaccharie Risacher of Team Rooks were also eliminated in this round along with Paul and Wembanyama. That was solely for their performance, though.
Their eliminations meant advancing to the final round were the Cleveland Cavaliers duo of Donovan Mitchell-Evan Mobley and the Golden State Warriors duo of Draymond Green-Moses Moody. Mitchell was asked about Paul and Wembanyama trying to hack the challenge before the final and hilariously stated they were cheating.
“They played to win… they was definitely cheating though.”
Mitchell and Mobley then went out and set a time to beat of 1:00.3 for Green and Moody, but the Warriors duo could not match it. That handed the title to the Cavaliers stars and they’d be hoping to win a couple more trophies by the end of this season.
