Nets’ Dennis Smith Jr. found himself in a whirlwind of emotions when a trade report by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski suggested he was headed to the Toronto Raptors. However, the confusion was quickly dispelled when Nets Assistant General Manager Andy Birdsong reached out to reassure Smith, calming his nerves amidst the chaos.

“So, I was on the phone with my dawg, right? And I had knew where Spencer was going to go because, you know, that’s my homie. And I’m like, ‘Yeah, Spencer’s going there, boom, boom,’ and I’m on FaceTime and I see my name pop up. And I’m like, ‘Man, hell nah,’ so I click on it: ‘Dennis Smith Jr. traded to the Raptors.'”

“And I’m like — I had a knot in my stomach, bro. I’m talking about I was sick. I look at my phone and it say ‘Andy Birdsong’ So I’m looking at that thing, I’m like, ‘I ain’t finna answer this shit.’ Then I was like, ‘No, I’m gonna answer.’ So then I press answer and he’s like, ‘No, no, no, it was a typo, you good, you staying here, don’t worry.'” (1:29)

Smith, who has been traded midseason twice before in his NBA career, recounted the rollercoaster of emotions he felt upon seeing Wojnarowski’s tweet. Initially, he saw Dinwiddie’s name in the trade and assumed he was safe, only to later discover his own name in a subsequent tweet.

The confusion and anxiety peaked when he received a call from Nets assistant General Manager Andy Birdsong, leading him to believe he was about to receive news of his trade. However, Birdsong quickly reassured Smith that it was merely a typo, and he was staying with the team.

The false trade report left Smith feeling sick and unable to relax, as his phone blew up with messages from concerned friends and family. Despite the initial shock, Smith maintained his sense of humor, sharing the experience with reporters and drawing laughter from the room.

Fortunately for Smith, the erroneous report did not materialize into reality, and he remains a member of the Brooklyn Nets. His resilience and ability to handle the situation with grace and humor highlight his professionalism and determination amidst the chaos of trade deadline day.

He has had a decent season with the Nets with some good performances and he has established himself as a lockdown defender as well. Smith averaged 7.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting 44.4% from the field and 28.4% from 3-point range.

As Smith continues his journey with the Nets, he remains focused on contributing to the team’s success and embracing the opportunities that lie ahead.

Trades Are One Of The Cruelest Realities For An NBA Player

Trades are a fundamental aspect of the NBA, serving as a mechanism for teams to restructure and acquire talent. While they are a necessary part of the business, they can also be incredibly harsh on players who find themselves unexpectedly moved to new teams. This reality becomes especially poignant when a player has spent years or even an entire career with one organization, building strong bonds with teammates, coaches, and the community.

The emotional toll of a trade can be profound, particularly when a player is content and settled in their current situation. The sudden upheaval requires them to relocate, often uprooting their families and disrupting their established routines. This upheaval can leave players feeling shocked, disoriented, and even betrayed by the organization they once called home.

One poignant example is Derrick Rose, who spent the early years of his career with the Chicago Bulls, earning MVP honors and becoming a beloved figure in the city. His trade to the New York Knicks came as a sudden and painful shock, captured on camera as Rose grappled with the news during a separate shoot.

Similarly, Isaiah Thomas’s journey from an overlooked prospect to an All-Star to an MVP candidate with the Boston Celtics was a storybook tale. However, his time with the team came to an abrupt end when he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of a deal for Kyrie Irving. Thomas’s expression of dismay at the trade underscored the personal toll such transactions can take, especially when they coincide with significant life events like his children starting school.

These examples highlight the human side of NBA trades, reminding us that behind the statistics and salary cap considerations are individuals whose lives and livelihoods are deeply impacted by these decisions. While trades are a necessary aspect of the league’s operations, they also serve as a stark reminder of the sometimes harsh realities faced by professional athletes.
