For a team that made the NBA Finals just two seasons ago, a lot has changed for the Phoenix Suns. The roster is still mostly the same as it was in 2021, but the culture, identity, and sense of urgency aren’t quite at the level they used to be.

This is why new owner Mat Ishbia is looking to go all-in on maximizing the group he currently has.

As Ishbia explained in a chat with The Athletic, he wants to win now and is determined to bring in the players they need to compete at the highest level.

“Phoenix … can be and will be an elite NBA franchise,” Ishbia said. “First off, the fans love the Suns. I want to be in a place where they’re excited and exhilarated about winning and being part of something. … Also, it’s a destination. Players want to go there. This is not like, I won’t mention cities, but I live in Detroit, right. It’s freezing here. People want to be there. The tax situation is good. It checks all the boxes.”

The Suns have had their ups and downs over the years, but Ishbia’s takeover is giving Suns fans new hope that action will be taken to save their season and start this new era on a high note.

Will Suns Make Trades Ahead Of The Deadline?

Ishbia enters a complicated situation in Phoenix but the return of Devin Booker should put his team back on the right track. Beyond that, though, the Suns will need to make some roster changes if they want to make a deep run.

“I understand what fans are looking for,” said Ishbia on the trade deadline. “And, trust me, I’m looking for the same thing. I realize that we have a great team, great players, great organization. We have the ability to win now. And we’re going to do everything we can to put the best team on the court.”

New owners love to talk a big game, and they frequently follow it up with big-time trades. Will Ishbia be one of those, or will he elect to stand PAT and wait until the summer before making a splash?

Either way, it seems inevitable that the Suns will break up this roster soon and that may be exactly what the team needs to get back on the right side of the Western standings.
