Recently, NBA legend Ralph Sampson gave his take on Victor Wembanyama being compared to him. Sampson claimed that Wembanyama is a “great talent”, who will be helped out by the Spurs. Ralph Sampson was a 7’4″ big man, and in his prime, he showcased some ballhandling and dribbling ability, though not at the level of Wembanyama right now.

“I’ve seen him online just a very little bit, but I can’t wait to see him in person. I think he is a great talent. I just hope the NBA doesn’t wear him out… I think he is in a great place with Coach Popovich, Tim Duncan, and David Robinson, who will help him out.”

It will be interesting to see what Victor Wembanyama’s rookie year will look like. He has already shown signs of being a great shot-blocker in summer league and could be All-Defensive level already. Of course, we’ll have to see him on an actual NBA court, but there is definitely a lot to be excited about with Wembanyama.

Last season with Metropolitans 92, Victor Wembanyama averaged 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game. We will see how well those numbers translate to the NBA, and it is clear that many are excited about his rookie season.

Jerry West Believes Victor Wembanyama Can Become An Iconic Player

Ralph Sampson is far from the only NBA legend who has spoken highly of Victor Wembanyama. Jerry West sees superstar potential in Wembanyama, noting that he can be an iconic player.

“He is one of those players that you feel like he’s gonna be an iconic player, West said. “He’s highly skilled. He can run, he can shoot threes, I think his best skill is going to be blocking shots early in his career. He’s pretty spectacular. But if you put a microphone in front of him, he is fantastic. He is more than a basketball player. He is someone who gives the league another positive voice…”

Jerry West is known as an elite talent evaluator in league circles, and his endorsement definitely suggests that Victor Wembanyama can find success in the future. At some point, he could even become the fact of the league.

Tracy McGrady Believes The Pressure On Victor Wembanyama Could Be Detrimental

As of right now, it is fair to say that the hype around Victor Wembanyama is insane, and he is certainly the most talked-about prospect since LeBron James. Sometimes, we have seen players fold under pressure. In fact, Tracy McGrady believes that too much hype around Victor Wembanyama could have a negative effect on his career.

It remains to be seen if Victor Wembanyama will live up to all of the expectations that are currently placed on him. Though the pressure is definitely increasing by the day, Wembanyama’s talent suggests that he will find a way to succeed, especially with the Spurs backing him.
