Kawhi Leonard’s departure from the San Antonio Spurs continues to intrigue basketball fans, prompting former teammates like Rudy Gay to reflect on the situation. Gay, who played alongside Leonard during the 2017-18 NBA season, recently shared his thoughts on the “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast hosted by Carmelo Anthony.

“That was some of the craziest, like, that was some of the craziest **** that I’ve seen in my life… he ain’t gonna talk like that, but you know, he say little funny like, you know, you know, he’s still a robot, but he’s not real though. He’s not real.”

“I caught the tail end of that, but like, I can see, like, he was just fed up, tired, man. When, when, when, you know, something new-found it. But it is, it is one of the craziest situations I’ve been apart of.”

“You know, it was refreshing though you know, that was like a first time in a long time I’ve ever seen like somebody just stand on it. You know what I mean? And I think that was the, that was the beginning of the era.”

“I mean, but besides Bron, obviously, you know, Bron, you know, GM and everything, but like this is what I want, This is, I’m gonna stand on it until I get it. I think he wanted to be gone. Oh, so that’s what I meant by like, yo, I mean he wanted to be, obviously he want to be healthy. Um, but I think he just needed to change.”

“I remember seeing Melo in the, in the immediate, they made it seem like you want to get a trade and get traded, but you still playing, so you’re dealing with the scrutiny and the criticism every day. Kawhi had to deal with none of that. He ain’t show up.”

Gay described the atmosphere during Leonard’s final season with the Spurs as “crazy” and suggested that Leonard seemed “fed up and tired” towards the end of his tenure. Despite only playing nine games that season due to injury, Leonard’s desire for change was evident to those around him.

Reflecting on Leonard’s departure, Gay characterized it as “refreshing,” noting that it was rare to see a player stand firm on their desires. He highlighted Leonard’s insistence on pursuing what he wanted, even if it meant leaving a successful organization like the Spurs.

Gay’s perspective underscores the shift toward player empowerment that Leonard’s departure symbolized, a trend that has become more prevalent in the NBA in recent years.

Gay’s insights into Leonard’s mindset shed light on the complexities surrounding his exit from the Spurs. While speculation persists about the reasons behind Leonard’s departure, Gay’s observations offer a glimpse into the frustrations and motivations that may have influenced Leonard’s decision to leave for the Toronto Raptors in 2018.

As one of Kawhi Leonard’s former teammates, Gay’s perspective adds depth to the ongoing discussion about the circumstances surrounding Leonard’s departure. While the specifics of Leonard’s decision remain somewhat elusive, Gay’s comments provide valuable insight into the player empowerment movement that Leonard’s departure helped catalyze in the NBA.

Kawhi Leonard Era With The Spurs Could Have Been So Different

During his six-year tenure with the Spurs from 2012 to 2018, Kawhi Leonard established himself as one of the premier two-way players in the NBA. Leonard’s statistical achievements with the Spurs are impressive. He averaged 16.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals while shooting 49.5% from the field and 38.6% from 3-point range.

He earned two NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards (2015, 2016) and was named to the NBA All-Defensive team four times. In addition to his individual accolades, Kawhi played a crucial role in the Spurs’ 2014 NBA Championship run, where he was named the NBA Finals MVP. He also played in the 2013 NBA Finals but the Spurs lost against the Heat after seven games.

The potential of Kawhi Leonard’s era with the San Antonio Spurs remains a captivating “what-if” scenario in NBA history.

Just before he went down with an injury, the Spurs were leading by over 20 points against the Golden State Warriors in Game 1 of the 2017 Western Conference Finals. But he was injured by Zaza Pachulia and this was the end of Leonard’s tenure at the Spurs. He was eventually traded in a shocking fashion to the Toronto Raptors in the 2018 offseason.

Had Leonard not succumbed to the injuries and the subsequent misdiagnosis that plagued his time with the Spurs, the trajectory of both his career and the franchise could have been drastically different.

One of the most glaring implications of an injury-free Leonard is the competitive threat he could have posed to the dominant Golden State Warriors during their reign.

With Leonard’s unparalleled defensive prowess and offensive versatility, the Spurs could have emerged as a formidable contender in the Western Conference, challenging the Warriors’ supremacy in the playoffs. The combination of Leonard’s elite skills and Gregg Popovich’s coaching acumen could have propelled the Spurs to renewed championship contention.

Furthermore, had Leonard remained healthy, the likelihood of him departing from the Spurs would have been significantly lower. Known for his quiet demeanor and strong work ethic, Leonard had established a deep connection with the Spurs organization and revered coach Popovich.

Without the frustrations stemming from his injury management and the subsequent fallout, Leonard may have continued to thrive in San Antonio, cementing his legacy as one of the franchise’s greatest players.

In this alternate timeline, Leonard’s tenure with the Spurs could have been defined by sustained success and 4 championships. With his contributions on both ends of the floor, Leonard could have played a pivotal role in leading the Spurs to further postseason glory, adding to the team’s storied history of championship triumphs.

Ultimately, the “what-ifs” surrounding Leonard’s tenure with the Spurs underscore the fragility of success in professional sports. Despite the unfortunate turn of events that characterized his time in San Antonio, the enduring impact of Leonard’s talent and potential serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of athletic careers.

While we may never know what could have been, the legacy of Kawhi Leonard remains a testament to his resilience and unwavering determination in the face of adversity.
