Dillon Brooks has made some rather controversial comments regarding LeBron James in recent months, and Rui Hachimura thinks all of it was done in an attempt to be a part of James’ legacy.

“I don’t know what’s the beef between those two guys,” Hachimura said. “I know they’ve been doing it for a while, especially last year in the playoffs. They have things going on. For Bron, it’s nothing… Dillon Brooks, he wants to be a part of his legacy, I guess.”

(starts at 1:35 mark):

I certainly wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking along those lines. Brooks is a good player, but only hardcore basketball fans would have remembered someone like him 20-30 years down the road.

Now, thanks to him repeatedly taking shots at James, his name does get attached to that of the Los Angeles Lakers superstar. Who knows, Brooks might even land himself a segment on a grand LeBron James documentary which will inevitably come out at some point after he retires. If that happens, then he’ll probably be remembered till the end of time.

I don’t personally believe that’s why Brooks is doing it, though. He is an instigator and a trash talker, who goes after whoever he faces. He’s made some bold remarks about other NBA stars, but because they’re not LeBron, those comments don’t catch fire.

Hachimura thinks Brooks’ comments and antics do end up motivating James, who had 37 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals on Sunday night to lead the Lakers to a 105-104 win over the Houston Rockets. Brooks, meanwhile, had a pretty good night of his own, finishing with 24 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, and 4 steals.

A Look At Dillon Brooks’ Wild Comments On LeBron James

The first interesting little tidbit came when Brooks threw shade at LeBron for being easier to guard on the Lakers than he was with the Cavaliers and Heat. The 27-year-old stated it would have been a harder task to guard LeBron back then and while it was a bit of a shot, it was still factual.

What followed, though, was really what got things going. Brooks insulted LeBron by calling him old and went on to say he doesn’t respect anyone until they score 40 points against him. LeBron didn’t get to 40 in any of the games in their playoff series, but he and the Lakers did blow out the Grizzlies by 40 points in the closeout Game 6.

He was widely mocked for making those comments and then losing in such an embarrassing fashion, but Brooks regretted nothing he said about James. He stood by everything and stated he’d continue to be himself.

LeBron James Did The “Too Small” Celebration After Scoring On Dillon Brooks

While LeBron brushed aside Brooks’ comments at first, it became clear very quickly that he intended to get back at him on the court. He did so in that playoff series and in this game on Sunday night, James did the “too small” celebration after scoring on Brooks.

While a lot of players have done this celebration in recent times, I don’t think I’ve ever seen LeBron do it before this. It just shows that he is human at the end of the day and his feathers do get ruffled when someone takes shots at him.
