Saks Fifth Avenue president Larry Bruce has issued an official apology to Washington Wizards GM Will Dawkins over a racial profiling incident that took place on November 2, 2023. A security guard at their store in Brickell City Centre committed the act and Bruce claimed it was a violation of their policies that should never have happened.

“I recently sent the letter below on behalf of Saks Fifth Avenue stores to apologize to Will Dawkins, the General Manager of the Washington Wizards, as well as to thank him for the way he has worked with us to create a positive outcome from the terrible experience he had in our Brickell store,” Bruce wrote on LinkedIn. “There was a violation of our policies that never should have happened.

“It is an important reminder to our entire organization that we must continually work to ensure that every guest that comes through our doors is welcomed and treated with respect,” Bruce continued. “As part of this, we are pleased to be making donations to three worthy organizations that are dedicated to making a positive impact on causes that are important to Mr. Dawkins: Greater Washington Urban League; Roca Springfield, Massachusetts; and Miami Coalition to Advance Racial Equity (MCARE).”

In the letter, Bruce stated that he fully acknowledged that the security member, who no longer works for them, broke protocol by approaching Dawkins without identifying himself, falsely accused him of shoplifting and wrongly detained him with the help of the Miami PD. He said the store takes full responsibility and thanked Dawkins for collaborating with them to resolve the matter.

Bruce also revealed that all Brickell security members were retrained and that he is committed to ensuring something like this never happens again. This incident took place the night before the Wizards were to play the Miami Heat in Miami and I suppose the silver lining is that no physical harm appears to have been caused.

Dawkins had become the GM for the Wizards in 2023 after spending over a decade working for the Oklahoma City Thunder. He started off as a front-office intern in 2008 and rose to the position of Vice president of basketball operations before the 2020-21 season. After three years in that role, he took the job with the Wizards.
